Junk mail intermittent

Featured Replies

I use a MacBook Pro, and I've recently seen a noticeable increase in junk mail, no idea why.  Probably a couple of dozen a day.

The Mac does a good job of filtering it out into a junk folder, but even when I block the sender and add key words to a 'rule' that deletes them, some still get through.  A good example here is HeySpin:

The red 'no entry' sign shows the sender's already blocked, and if you look in the 'Rules' if the subject line contains 'Heyspin', it should just get deleted without me seeing it.  So I'm under the impression that I shouldn't get it on two counts.

I wondered if it's just intermittent, or if anyone knows if I'm doing something wrong, or missing a trick?

Hi @Gaz, whilst I'm a Mac user, I use webmail more than the macOS mail app so not that familiar with it. Having said that, the position and emboldening of "HeySpin New Releases" suggests to me that it's the sender rather than subject line. If it is, then maybe it's the deviousness of junk mail senders subtly changing the 'from address' to work around the filters, and the mail app filter is not quite getting there. Do you also have a rule that blocks from addresses that contain HeySpin rather than a specific address?

Also, check your Junk Mail Behaviours settings. I'm guessing you don't want this...

I've recently started getting nearly 100 spam emails every day to my hotmail account, they all go into the Junk folder.

But this is the problem since the web version of hotmail only runs the Rules I have defined on Inbox! ... and I'm loathe to allow the spam into my Inbox.

I can't just use the Mac Mail app as I also use 2 windows PCs during the day, so I need a solution that works on the web version of hotmail - any/all suggestions welcome.

Thanks @SteveTheElder - yes, I've got rules that (should) delete Heyspin if the word's in the sender, subject name, and also the specific email address.  And the rule:

I'm thinking I may have to resort to napalm, or my Phalanx CIWS 🔫

I've noticed an uptick in junk over the last month or so, makes me think some filter has been removed prior to being sold back to us.

Most of what I'm seeing is so poor the filters from 15yr ago would screen no problem which is what makes me think it's being allowed through deliberately.

Without wishing to tempt fate, the high volume of junk stopped, all of a sudden, five days ago.  I've not adjusted anything, and I've had no junk at all (other than than which should be being deleted without me seeing it, which I obviously won't know about).

Weird.

Could mean the botnet controlling it was taken out or the mailserver etc. Or some servers have been added to a blacklist. You'll never know.
