Will the spare from my Mk II fit on a Mk III?

Featured Replies

I am about to trade in my Superb Mk II (2012 1.8 TSI) for a 2018 Mk III 1.4 SE Technology. The new one doesn't have a spare. Will my Skoda-supplied full size spare fit on the new car, and be usable as an emergency  temporary replacement?

My current car has 205/55R16 tyres on 16" rims, and the new one has 17" rims.

Many thanks for any tips.

Hello Martin, welcome to the forum. Probably - I think I have MK2 Audi wheels on mine at the moment.

Check the PCD of the wheel bolts - this information is moulded into the inside face of the wheel (if alloy) - If it says 5 x 112, the wheel will fit, the overall tyre diameter will most likely be very similar because the 17 will probably be a lower profile (smaller sidewall)

An online search tells me that your Mk2 17" wheel bolt pattern is the same, 5 x 112. Depending on the width and profile of the 17", the increase in ride height over the 16" will be minimal - as will the effect on speedo accuracy - E.g. if your 17" tyre is 205/50/R17, ride hight will increase by 2.45mm and speed at indicated 60MPH will decrease by approx. 0.5MPH compared to the 16.

The wheel will physically fit. The tyre will be too small in diameter and I would get it swapped for a 205/65/16 on that wheel. Just check it will fit in the wheel well.

The 205/55R16 from the Superb MK2 is probably fitted to a 7Jx16 ET45 rim, as this is the usual rim size for the Superb MK2.

If it is the 7Jx16 ET45 rim size, the actual width of the 205/55R16 tyre will be about 220mm. This is about 5mm too wide to fit in the spare wheel well without lifting the carpet.

So it might be best to purchase another steel rim, such as a 6Jx16 ET43 5/112 57.1 steel rim from the Karoq. This will allow you to fit the correct 215/60R16 tyre size for the Superb MK3, and then it will fit flush in the spare wheel well.

The reason for the 6Jx16 ET43 Karoq rim, is because if you use the 6.5Jx16 ET41 rim from the Superb MK3, the spare wheel won't fit flush in the spare wheel well. This is because the actual width of a 215/60R16 tyre fitted to a 6.5Jx16 rim is about 221mm, which will raise the carpet.

Technically, both Mk2 and Mk3 use the same spare wheel size: 205/55/16, though standard diameter on Mk3 is a bit wider.

Thus, it should fit (I just have a doubt if width and ET values are the same), but you’ll be limited to 50mph if you have to use it.

You can then keep the rim of your spare wheel but replace its tyre to have the same diameter as your other wheels. @MartiniB has done it. He can tell you the right size for that.

I think you can’t exceed 215mm for tyre width otherwise it will lift up the boot carpet.

Thanks for the many helpful replies. As it turned out, the new car did have a spare, although the dealer hasn't listed it on the spec, so it wasn't an issue in the end. I hope I didn't waste your time, and I expect the info here will be useful for others.
