Comes back with 280 as the first hit on that site so according to you  that's wrong as well  ;)

I also checked autodoc and a few sites. Mostly 22mm thickness and 280mm discs come up. There is the odd 288mm by 25mmm but 99% of suggestions are 280mmx22mm

I have bought and tried the carriers from the 170 and they do not fit. Bolt holes are incorrect. So your theory doesn't add up unfortunately.

The discs and pads fit no problem, but not the carrier

Build codes for front brakes

1ZA 312x25mm front brake discs

1ZE 288x25mm front brake discs

1ZF 280x22mm front brake discs

Build code 1ZA and 1ZE use the same wheel bearing housings, as shown in the chart below.

The front brake carriers bolt directly to the wheel bearing housings.

So if the front brake carriers for the 312x25mm front brakes don't fit, it's because you have 280x22mm front brakes, ie. build code 1ZF.

Wheel bearing housing for 280x22mm front brakes (the brake carrier is built into the wheel bearing housing)

As you say I must have the 280x22. But 100 percent my carriers are not built on to the hubs like your picture. Mine unbolt seperatley so not sure where that hub is from.

So if I sourced a pair of the 170's hubs and carriers to suit. Would they bolt straight in with the drive shafts and wheel bearing?

What OEM part number were the carriers that you tried?

What was the spacing of the bolt holes?

I bought one of these and tried it as it said its for the the 170. Couldn't tell you what the holes were but the holes were to far apart on the new carrier.

The diagram of the ATE 11.0230-0131.1 shows that one of the spacing measurements is 146mm.

What is the Mapco spacing and what is the spacing on the wheel bearing housing?

If the ATE diagram is correct, the spacing should be 146mm on the wheel bearing housing.

Mine has the 280mm discs I think, it was the lowest powered Yeti, it does not have caliper carriers, the calipers bolt directly to the steering knuckle = wheel bearing carrier.

You can use the large discs and calipers from an earlier Golf GTi, I bought a set from Ebay quite some while back but they are in storage following my move and the job wont be done for a very long time.

You have to use the corresponding steering knuckle, that brings its own problem in that the knuckle is for a 50mm strut body IIRC and mine has the smaller diameter struts, 45mm I think, so I have to either change the struts which I only fitted last year or use adaptors which are available.

A long post to explain that if you have the smallest brakes you can upgrade to the decent ones but its more complicated.

The other thing putting me off doing the upgrade is aside from having to refurbish the calipers I cannot believe the weight of the set up, it is by far the heaviest of my removal cases heavier even than the ones with all the lathe tooling and bar stock. Granted I have not weighed my current set up but these are astonishingly heavy, the car will need a brake upgrade to cope with the extra weight 😄

Well that confirms i definitely don't have the 280x22 discs as my carriers un bolt from the hub.

EBC brakes on autodoc thinks that the Yeti 2.0TDI 150HP (2 or 4 wheel drive) uses 288x25mm front brakes.

Most of the other brands on autodoc list more than one size for that engine version, which means that they either don't know or that more than one brake size was used.

Out of the diesel engined Yetis, it's only the 105HP and 110HP versions that EBC lists as having the smallest 280x22mm front brakes.

Audi made some lightweight forged alloy rims with a specification of 7Jx16 ET45 5/112 57.1 for the A4 (around the year 2000) that weighed only 7.3kg.

So changing to those could offset the extra weight of 312x25mm discs. 7.3kg rims would probably save between 2kg to 3kg each rim compared to the standard Yeti 7Jx17 ET45 5/112 57.1 alloy rims.

From the below chart, changing from 288x25mm to 312x25mm adds 1.3kg to the weight of each brake disc. The carrier is probably also a little heavier.

Weight of each front brake disc (according to Brembo)

280x22mm 5.9kg

288x25mm 7.3kg

312x25mm 8.6kg

With 7Jx16 ET45 rims, you could fit slightly oversize 225/60R16. This is one of the tyre sizes that the Karoq 4x4 uses. Compared to the standard 215/60R16 it only increases the gearing by 1.8% as shown in the chart below.

Outside diameter of tyres

215/60R16 664.4mm

225/60R16 676.4mm (+1.8%)

225/60R16 has 20% more sidewall height than 225/50R17 as shown in the chart below. The improvement in ride comfort of the 20% higher sidewalled tyre should be quite noticeable.

Sidewall height

225/50R17 112.5mm

225/60R16 135mm (+20%)

I have ordered a carrier bracket with the number you supplied yesterday so we will see if you are correct in a few days.

But i suspect the bracket I have ordered is the same as the previous one I had months ago and won't fit.

Feel free to message me with your VIN if you want to know what brakes/carriers/calipers the car was built with.

I see a mountain being made from a molehill.  I found this to be very straightforward.  I purchased a set of Mk5 Golf GTI / GT Sport 170 TDI caliper carriers and a set of 312mm discs and some new pads.

Initially I fitted EBC Spotties and Greenstuff pads.  Unfortunately, they only lasted 12k miles, no doubt because I'm the last of the late brakers and probably because I've set XDS to 'Hard".

The car now has drilled Brembo discs and their HP pads on the front.  I've just fitted Pagid discs and pads on the rear and that has also helped with pedal feel and stopping power.

8.6kg per disc 🤯 thats nearly 3 stone a pair 😒

And the calipers were really really heavy as well, no wonder I cannot lift the box.

I'm used to Triumph Spitfire discs with Willwood alloy 4 pot calipers!

My 140 was as simple as that.

Is yours a 150?

Do you have the part number for the carrier you fitted? I don't want to buy a cheap one off ebay.

I have similar discs and pads waiting to go on mine once I get the carriers

No, afraid not.  I had a Golf TDI 170 as well, at the time, so I was pretty sure they'd fit.   I bought a set c/w with calipers from a breaker, then had them blasted and powder coated.

I got them from Wigan VAG Parts who I purchased an Audi door from previously.  Owned by a guy called Danny Hill who's always been very helpful and great to deal with.

Thanks @Schtum iv ordered a pair of calipers and carriers from them 👌

Been a while since I started this thread. Since I broke my leg Iv had some down time to finish this job. Iv had them powder coated and a rebuild kit. Accompanied with Breaded lines all to go on when I'm able to take a wheel off.

My front discs and pads are due anyway, pretty sure they might be original. I bought it with 11000miles (now 65000) in 2023 anniversary never done the front brakes.

Mk5 golf calipers from scrappie £40

Rebuild kit £40

Powder coating £100

Breaded lines £90 (front and rear with new banjos)

Brembo grooved discs and pads (£100 on autodoc)

Still cheaper than a disc and pad change in a garage 😂

Never powder coat your legs. It will end in tears...
