Suspension noises

Featured Replies

Does anybody else hear popping and banging coming from the front and rear suspension on their 1.5, 2022 Karoq ?

it only seems to happen at low speeds or least I don’t hear it at normal travelling speeds.

Try a spray can of silicone lubricant,

spray rubber gaiters and bushes (but don't spray the brakes)

Does silicone harm the bushes in any way.  So would it do any harm to treat a car with no apparent suspension faults with silicone lubricant - just a thought.

I say this that I've sometimes noticed in past cars that in wet weather a car's ride can soften a bit over ridges and a garage man I used to know said that was due to water finding it's way into the bushes.  Of course the extra sloshing noises in such weather does partly drown out other car noises including road noises and that can on its own subjectively make the ride seem a bit better.

Ours (picked up in Aug 23 with 4500 miles) is doing this - was most apparent first time I went in a multistorey car park and the clonking as it changed direction for each ramp then straightened out, was ridiculous.   I thought it might get better with use, but it hasn't and it's going back in a couple of weeks for the dealer to look at (also noisy a/c).  I presume it does it all the time but you can't hear it at speed.

We (thankfully) don't have many speedbumps around here but I noticed driving over some this week that it does a double clonk.  Sounds like it;s coming from high up at the front but I'm aware it's always hard to tell.

There's the odd noise from the back but it's more sporadic.  I'm finding the car quite creaky / squeaky at the rear to the extent that I checked all the rear seats were in correctly, secured the belts etc etc.

Yep. Like it since I got the car Feb/2020

Been in twice and they told me it's "a charactersitic of the car".  Mine is worse on a cold morning and when going downhill over speedhumps it is especially bad.  Never did get under the car and let a can of silicone do its thing so I guess it doesn't bother me "that" much 🙂

I wonder if a PTFE spray would be a good option too? I had a squeak on an exercise machine that has rubber cupped wheels on metal tubes and some wet ptfe spray did the job very well and has lasted years.

Actually - I might give this a go sometime soon.  Does anyone have a pretty diagram showing all of the bushes and their locations that might benefit from a spray?  I looked through all of the workshop manuals I have saved over the years but none of them seem to cover the suspension.

Cheers,

Paul

Had car in last couple of days for this (and replacement a/c compressor mentioned in another thread).

It seems they couldn't hear anything and just 'lubricated the suspension'.  Bit annoyed with myself that I didn't demo it when the technician came out to listen to the a/c but I thought it was obvious when going over speed bumps, and the garage has one on the entry to the servicing area.

They gave me a pretty well identical courtesy car and that didn't do it all so it was blissful to drive and at least I know it's not something they all do.

That dealer selected deafness - ain't it great 🙂

Funny how when you say that you "might be interested in a list price new Diesel their hearing dramatically improves. Mind you - that sort of talk would cause such a silence in the world I expect anyone could hear a pin drop in the showroom.

they also have selective vision....  when I took the car in for a self reclining drivers seat they couldn't see it move - despite having put white tape on the adjuster wheel and seat so it could be clearly seen when it did. I should have put some white tape on a stick and handed it to the "master tech". Pah!

Silicone oil (£2.99 a can from Lidl when available) or Waxoyl (Halfords) sprayed or brushed on will stop any rubber squeaking. Waxoyl is especially effective.

In return can anyone tell me what to lubricate to stop the driver door stay squeaking as the door is opened and closed. I have tried silicone oil into the slot but it has no effect.

Are you sure it's not loose?  They have a habit on all VW Group cars of the bolts loosening.  Although they generally make more a clunk when that happens.
