vRS TDI Front Brake Disc Measurements (Nominal & Minimum Thickness)

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the vRS TDi 184PS brake disk measurements ?

  • Thickness of a new part
  • Minimum allowed thickness from Skoda before changing?

I had my 10 year "MOT" in Switzerland yesterday & it passed without any issues.

There is only one point that they said the front brake disks are quite worn & I must "prove" that the thickness is above the minimum recommended by Skoda.
This I knew already but I was waiting to change them next year as from my point of view the braking is still strong & smooth (which the test also showed) and there is plenty of meat left on the pads.

Basically I need a "recognised garage" in Switzerland to measure the disks & sign a paper to say they are above the minimum value & safe to use.

I would just like have an idea of the minimum values myself before I visit my regular garage tomorrow just to make sure they don't take me for a ride & ask me to change them.

Thanks in advance!

Your brake thickness will have minimal effect on braking.

the difference will be when the brakes are so thin it’s all of a sudden metal to metal or the disc cracks cause it’s so thin.

Please don’t take your car stopping fine as proof that your brake pads and discs are fine.

surely the mot place has the ability to check minimum thickness for components, else whatever you give them could be made up or for the wrong car no?

Minimum thickness is often stamped into the disc,  either around the edge, or on the 'bell' part.

The early Octavia MK3 2.0TDI VRS were fitted with 340x30mm front brake discs, the later ones were fitted with smaller 312x25mm front brake discs.

Minimum thickness is 27mm for the 340x30mm discs, and 22mm for the 312x25mm discs, ie. 3mm of allowable wear for both discs.

Thanks everyone.

My car has the larger 340mm disks.

My car has been serviced according to the recommended schedule at the Skoda main dealer since new so I've no reason to believe the disks should be out of spec.

However, at the last service, I changed the rear disks/pads because the were heavily corroded on the recommended of the garage.

During the technical checks, they recognised the front disks were not new compared with the rears.

When requested, the owner must provide a technical documentation, signed by a Swiss registered mechanic who attests that the part in question conforms to the manufacturers minimum requirements & are safe to use.

I guess it is a way control the garages as well as the cars perhaps.

Anyway, the garage will measure them tomorrow & I hope give them all clear.
