Fabia 1.2 belt tensioner miss alignment and noise

Featured Replies

Hi there! I’m trying to find out what is causing the miss alignment of the belt or tensioner and also pretty loud noise on my 1.2 Fabia. As shown in the photos, the belt is a bit outside on the tensioner pulley, not sure if the pulley is in or if the belt is out. The belt seems to be in good condition although I’m not sure about the tension on it. I removed the tensioner and at first sight it seems to be fine, but honestly I’m not sure actually what I can check on it.

I uploaded videos of the noise and tension and photos of the miss-alignment and tensioner.

Can someone advice on what I should properly investigate? …or if somebody had the same issue, I would greatly appreciate some help.

Thanks!

On my 1.9 TDi,which has a broadly similar arrangement,it was the support spindle that was worn where it swivels to keep the belt tension correct, letting the pulley go off line a touch.I simply replaced the whole thing.Job done.

@maccyhas nailed it, just replace the complete tensioner assembly and all will be well.

Thank you so much! Can't wait to go in the morning and order it ...along with a new belt :)

I wish it was that simple 😞 New tensioner and belt but the noise is still there. It did fix though the belt going a bit outside the pulley, so that’s good.

I checked the other pulleys and it seems the issue comes from the AC compressor, it’s the only pulley that doesn’t spin freely and it’s actually making weird noises even when moving it by hand (video attached). I will try to remove its  pulley and see if there something obvious there - if anybody knows about any common issues with it, I would appreciate the help. Thanks!🙏

The Aircon compressor is permanently engaged, there is only a shear coupling behind the pulley which breaks if the compressor seizes.

For short term silence buy a serpentine belt for a non AC equipped version of your vehicle, its good to keep as a spare.

Thank you so much for the amazing suggestion! Indeed, it was the best quick fix...it didn't cross my mind but opened up a new way of problem-solving thinking for me, haha :)

👌

deleted, I was thinking of another suggestion recently posted, thanks for the thanks!
