Rear Bike Carriers

Featured Replies

Hi all - long time since I've been on!

Just wondering if I can use any standard bike carrier on the Skoda. It's a hatch with the long slanted windscreen (with rear wiper) as part of the boot. I know roof bars or tow bars would be better options, but I can't justify the cost for the amount of times I'd use it.

Anyone had any experience? I've seen a Maypole 2 carrier at euro car parts (Maypole Rear Mounted 2 Bike Carrier | Euro Car Parts ) - and was hoping this would work - especially as the picture is similar to my own boot.

Any help suggestions would be welcome.

I have lots of experience of this type on lots of vehicles but not a Superb, but small hatches, hot hatches, estates, saloons. MPV,s

You need to protect where you put the clasps, helicopter tape. you have to set it up very well.

Take weight on the bumper or where it sits, protect against dirt scratching there.

Be careful of the roof straps with spoilers, get the angle of the dangle right for the straps.

You might need the rear wiper off, or tape the switch so you do not activate the wiper in error, or be sure the wiper is not inhibited by touching anything.

You need the hook / strap tightening the carrier down to the towing eye or whatever with the carrier loaded.

So bikes on you can not open the rear hatch.

You need the bikes very high to clear lights, but that is not good at 60-70 mph,  also an issue at some car park height barriers, or under railway tunnels to beach fronts.

You need a light board if lights obscured, you need a registration plate on the light board.

Use extra straps to secure bikes.

Reduce the weight of them if you can with bags, bottles etc removed.

Be aware of the length of bikes sticking out from the width of a car. Not a problem with a Superb really.

That is about it, use common sense and a £30 one is about as good as a £130 one.

That's  great, thank you.

Rear wiper does not work for now, so thast one less worry!

However, a worry is that since i got the car, the boot does randomly open, usually after i close the front door and start walking towards the back (intermittent, but irritating). but i guess the weight of the bikes would stop it going all the way up.

Cheers.
