engine oil viscosity change.

Featured Replies

Hey Guys, sorry if this question has already been answered, but I took my mk3 fabia (MY16) in for a service yesterday (11/09/2023) and noticed that they'd used 0W30 engine oil VW 504 00, 507 00.

Normally I service the car myself, but due to injury, I've not been able to.

The car has done 84,100 miles and I (normally) service it every year at around 8,000-10,000 miles using Castrol Edge 5W30LL oil (also VW 504 00, 507 00), however as stated above, Skoda used 0W30, should i be worried about this? should I change it back to 5W30, or am I just nitpicking?

Once again, sorry if this has already been answered before, thanks in advance for any feedback.

0W30 will get round the engine quicker at a cold start, so is better.

Thanks for the reply. So, nothing to sorry about then?

Not unless you want to worry that engine oils are just getting too good.

Toot will be along before long to (correctly) tell you you don't need to use longlife oil for yearly servicing at those sorts of annual mileages (as long as it's a petrol engine?), and possibly get in a shouting match with another guy about whether 5W40 to 502 00 spec may be better in those circumstances. Brace yourself.

No. It's not even like the 0W (or 5W) value will apply once the engine's been running about 2 minutes (since the oil won't be at 0C any more). The one difference it might make is that you have "some" oil pressure before the engine even fires with 0W (I did with Mobil 1).
