Exhaust carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle exceeds manufacturer's specified limits

Featured Replies

Failed MOT on above. Symptoms are EML on, recent excessive oil consumption, occasional smell of exhaust, and misfire at low revs. Garage did say there was a minor exhaust leak on the flexi, but said that would not be the cause. He plugged in laptop, and it came back with CAT problem. He said he was not convinced, although it could be, or a valve problem. Taking it back next week, for them to have a look. He said a new cat would solve the problem for now, but the problem would come back later on. Any advice would be appreciated.IMG_0869.thumb.JPG.e239698a3e859a8dfd3169a33b703ca9.JPG

This is the thing to investigate before anything else. Compression test may be revealing. When were the spark plugs last looked at or replaced?

Flexi is after both oxygen sensors so I think I agree that won't be causing trouble, apart from noise.

Ideally this would have been in the Mk1 Fabia section, but it's not the end of the world that it's here.

Thanks Pete. It is a 2010 Car.

He did mention checking spark plugs, so hopefully it`s that.

Oh, OK; then the engine identification at the top of the printout is wrong. AZQ engine wasn't fitted after the end of 2004 I believe.

Limits will still be wildly exceeded even when that is corrected though, I expect.

MOT man was trying to throw the OP a bone using earlier engine spec.

The cat will be brutally oil-fouled, compression test essential.

So is it likely the valve and cat are toast?

The cat will clean up but you'll have to stop it burning oil first.

Do you think a bottle of Cataclean might help with the emissions?

More chance of a lottery jackpot win.

No, it's oil-fouled, snake oil won't do anything because the car is burning oil.
