Newbie Oil Question

Featured Replies

H1ello,
My 2018 petrol Kodiaq is due an oil change soon and I'm going to do it myself.
I just want to make sure I'm not gone to damage the engine if I use normal synthetic 5w-30.
The manual suggests I only take it to a dealer for 'special' oil but this sounds like a scare tactic to make me pay more.
I doubt that my local mechanic had been using anything special in previous oil changes.
If anyone can help me I'll be grateful.
Thanks
David

Hello David, use the oil specification that Skoda or VW state for your engine.

Try looking up on Opie Oil website for correct spec. What TSI engine do do you have?

Welcome.

What TSi a 1.4 , 1.5 ACT or 2.0l.

Your car will have come from the factory with VW508 00 / 509 00 which is 0w 20 FS IV because that is what they started using. Unless possibly a 1.4 TSI.

That is the recommended oil not the VW504 00 / 507 00   5w 30 FS III.

Please yourself.

Are you up near Moray @MorayDavid?    Maybe your mechanic actually knows the VW Engines and oils.

?

What about your other service items, have you got a AWD so Haldex to service.

Spark Plugs to replace, brake fluid to change?

Is there nothing like this in the engine compartment?

Thanks, that's really useful info.

It's a 1.4 and I'll check for the label in the engine bay tonight.

I suppose what I really am trying to find out is why does the manual say 'Only top up with maximum 0.5l of oil and take it to a dealer for a full change?'

Also what size socket etc do I use for sump plug, please?

It'll save me putting it on the ramps just to check.

David (yes I'm in Moray)

As to why they say take to stealer for full change - that's just to drum up business for their network.

I am pretty sure that @silver1011has a 1.4 TSI and it is VW504 00 / 507 00  so 0w 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III that is the oil for them before the change over.

@MorayDavidI think you are maybe misreading the manual.

There is the using a different oil for a top up.

There is the top up in small amounts.

You check the level at Normal Operating temp.   Cold is OK to see there is enough oil in.

@MorayDavid Opie Oil website specifies fully synthetic engine oil to VW504 00 - 507 00 standard, 5W-30.

Just tried the Opie website for my car out of curiosity, and they didn't link to the correct oil, but the online chat guy gave me a link to a list of suitable oils.

Just bung your reg number in and off you go. 👍

Opie are a good reliable business👍.   Prices OK too especially with free carriage 🙂

My 2018 1.4 TSI ACT 150PS came from the factory with 0W20 VW508.00 / VW509.00.

At it’s first service the main dealer replaced it with 5W30 VW507.00.

the 0W20 is all about achieving strict emissions targets. 5W30 is (in my opinion) is better suited for engine longevity.

I use the genuine VAG oil called Quantum (manufactured by Fuchs). It’s called Longlife III and is around £35 for a 5 litre cube.

@silver1011 I thought the ACT came in with the change to the 1.5 TSI - have I got that wrong?

@Warrior193, my 1.4 TSI Kodiaq definitely has ACT 👍

On the Octavia 3 that's the case, but some other models had the 1.4TSI ACT engine.

How does 5W30 help with engine longevity?

Maybe it will not, but if you have a TSI that is a keeper then you decide.

Maybe use 0w 30 FS III.  (Still long life.)     The 1.4 TSI or TSI ACT can use VW502 00 for Fixed Oil & Service Regimes.

VW 504 00 / 507 00 so 5w 30 FS III as the recommended oil in Euro 5 1.4 TSI Twinchargers or some 1.8 / 2.0 TSI,s was OK if the engine was not crap,

and when it was not using Long Life oil and going VW502 00 so 5W 40 FS saved some from high oil use and let them keep running their keepers.

I've been using Fuchs Titan C3, 5W30, VW504/507 for past 4 years.

It’s exactly the same as Quantum Longlife III, I flit between the two depending on which I can source cheapest 👍

5W30 and 0W20 are well documented to be better suited to colder climates such as the UK, with 5W30 been the viscosity of choice for most manufacturers for a long time.

The more recent move to 0W20 is all about meeting stricter emissions targets, not engine longevity.

Whilst 0W20 works better in really cold weather 5W30 is better at maintaining strength and oil pressure at higher temperatures and loads, which for me offers better benefits.

How about compromising and using 0W/30 oil? 😊

I’m no expert, more cynical towards Skoda’s change to a lower viscosity oil. They’ve proven time and time again that their priority is reducing servicing costs for their own benefit, not maximising engine and turbo longevity for owners like me that run their vehicles well out of warranty.

5W30 has served me well over my time. It’s unlikely 0W20 will make that much of a difference to durability but I’m not convinced it’s worth the change.

Either way I’d ensure you stick to the VAG approved oils.

Am I right in Saint that the oil is emptied using a flat head screwdriver?

Therefore I don't have to take off the undertray or purchase a sump plug?

Thanks

Couldn't see a way to edit my post to change saint to saying!

That is not a problem.

Have you actually looked at your car and the sump yet?
