DPF regeneration or something else?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, I have owned a Kodiaq 2.0 TDI 190hp since 6 months ago, the car has covered 60,000 miles.
First of all, let me say that I am aware of how DPF regeneration works, but recently a strange thing has been happening to me, which seems to tell me to top up the battery rather than DPF regeneration, although it has the same symptoms. Since I travel short distances to work every day (1.5 miles one way) the active regeneration comes on relatively often (at about 80 miles) if I drive it exclusively around town. What has been confusing me lately is that the regeneration starts (the revolutions increase to 1000rpm and the fan continues to work when I stop the regeneration) when I arrive at work and the engine has not even reached 80c, which is a condition for the start of the regeneration, and the message engine must appear be running but what's even more strange to me is when I come back in the afternoon and go home (after 8 hours after turning off the car) it all resumes immediately when I start the car...I drive a little fast on the open highway for about 8 miles and it all goes off. Since everything points to DPF regeneration, I am concerned that it activates when the car is cold, so I suspect that maybe the car is trying to recharge the battery.
Has anyone had a similar experience?

If I remember correctly newer cars do not need high engine temperatures to start regen. They kind of inject the fuel directly into DPF to get the regen temperature up sooner.

But first buy some cheap OBD dongle and download VAG DPF app to phone. Gives you a pretty clear picture what is going on with DPF.

As it increases the revs my money would be on a regen, especially as you say it happens the next time you use the car after an incomplete one has happened (as the fans continued to run after the engine was swithed off)

If this that @linni wrote is true there is no doubt that it is dpf regeneration. The only strange thing is that I couldn't read anywhere that the regeneration continues the next time the car is started when the engine is completely cold (regeneration turns on immediately when the car is turned on) and I don't know anyone who has had this happen. Also @linni can you recomend some cheap ODB dongle that is working with VAG DPF?

Thanks I'll check this definitely!

You do now, that was the final straw that made me get the emissions fix rolled back 18 months ago, I have only been aware of 2 regens since then! IE fans running at switch off, high idle speed etc.

I think that they rushed the emissions fix software and made some serious errors.

I never noticed this until moving when my journey profile changed to journeys long enough for the regen conditions to be met starting a regen but short enough (20km) for it not to be able to finish, I think after it has had say 5 failed attempts it starts regenning from start up on a cold engine which is crazy because it still could not complete in the 20km.

I do not understand why you think it is trying to charge the battery and think you are misleading yourself.

@J.R. sorry I'm not following you here...what did you do to change it, rollback softwere or something else? Please advise me.

Yeah, I'm aware of this now...I never owned a diesel engine with DPF before so this is new to me also I consulted with friends who have DPF and they don't have this type of behavior that regen starts immediately when saw the engine start so my other guess was battery charging and unfortunately, I was wrong since this shows me that my dpf regeneration is happening too often.

Software was "rolled back" to the version it left the factory with, the one that cheated the emissions test, my car like most yours included had had the software updated to the "emissions fix" one by the servicing dealer and it was that which made the cars drive poorly, choke up the EGR valves and DPF's and do these constant regens.

It cost a significant amount to have done but was worth every penny.
