Help Please - how do i connect additional LED strip to existing DRLs?

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

Hoping someone can shed some light here.

Essentially i have a project that i'm looking at doing that involves adding an additional LED strip, that will behave just like the factory DRLs, i.e. full brightness and dim.
when the factory DRLs r at full power, the additional LED strip will also b at full power.
when the factory DRLs r dimmed, the additional LED strip will also dim.

ideally i splice into the approapriate wire at the headlight connector, and piggy back the additional LED strip off that.
worse case, i have to get power from the BCM.
i definitely do not want to open my headlights.

Would this b possible?

My car is a Skoda Superb MY17, with factory DRLs in the bi-xenon headlights, as per the pic. it uses a 14-pin headlight connector.
from the various diagrams i've seen, i can see Pin #10 & #12 are the ones i could potentially use, as they are pos+ for the DRL stripes.

so, in theory, if i splice into either #10 or #12, and ground (#7), will i b able to achieve my target?

This is Pinout mapping i've found on the internet, though in my case, i have a wire in Pin #13, which i don't know what that is for
1 - CAN High (orange/brown)
2 - CAN Low (orange/red)
3 - Not used
4 - Power for AFS slave (black/purple)
5 - Ground (brown)
6 - Power for Xenon Balast (yellow)
7 - Ground (brown)
8 - Not used
9 - Turn signal (black/green)
10 - LED DRL + (grey/red)
11 - Bi-xenon shutter (grey)
12 - LED DRL + (grey/blue)
13 - Not used (unknown wire in my case - grey/purple )
14 - Not used

any help/advise/guidance is much appreciated.
Thank you.

Please dont do it like that, do it properly;

Create a new Leuchte channel in the BCM and run your LEDs off of that, if you use the DRL wire at the headlights your LEDs will flicker as its not a simple 12V feed.

There will be a lot of spare channels in your bcm, the hardest part will be running the wire through the bulkhead.

@ApertureS - that would b the ideal way to do it, by connecting to the BCM directly.

I did some more reading up on how people retrofitted the VW light bar and illuminated badge, and someone mentioned using Pin A61 from the BCM.

"This is necessary for the conversion from DRL to high beam brightness."

Question is - how do I create Leuchte channel, and code/program it to be and act like a DRL?

I'm comfortable with accessing the BCM as I've done it before when I did the illuminated door sills retrofit.

I'll need to however do my research on the Leuchte channels.

Thanks.

Sorry if I´m curious. C’est

What’s the purpose of additional DRLs ?

Sounds like he wants to add a horizontal lightbar in the grille a la new Kodiaq

Guilty.

How did u know/guess!?!?

The Superb pre-facelift grille has opening that lines up with headlight DRL strips.

It's just a project that I may, or may not do.

Depends if I can tap into the BCM correctly first.

Then I'll c how it looks with the LED strip behind the grille.

take a read through this -

It’s fairly self explanatory when you get into it.

find an unused channel, set typ, set dimmwerrt to 127, set AB to DRL or whatever else, run your wire to the pin that is shown at the end of the leuchte channel name

thanks to the responses, and doing further research on other forums, my plan is to use an unused BCM channel (i only need 1 channel/wire for this purpose), set Lichtfunktion, set Dimmwert, set Dimming etc etc, run the '+' wire to the pin that matches the Leuchte channel - and Bob's my uncle!!

Looking at the admap for my 09 Central Electrics currently, i have homed in on two potential leuchte channels that I could use, that are currently "not active".

this also taking into account the BCM (J519) Control Unit wiring diagram i got from erWin Skoda.
- Leuchte9FL RB2
- Leuchte8FL LB39

My current DRLs occupy the following channels sets:-
- Leuchte2SL VLB10 - LED daytime running light module signal (left)
- Leuchte4TFL LB4 - LED daytime running light module supply (left)
- Leuchte16BLK SLB35BLK SL KC9 - 43 - allgemeine LED (left)

- Leuchte3SL VRB21 - LED daytime running light module signal (right)
- Leuchte5 TFL RB32 - LED daytime running light module supply (right)
- Leuchte17TFL R BLK SRB3TFL R BLK SR KC3 - 43 - allgemeine LED (right)

my intention is to run the additional LED strip's positive wire to BCM Pin B39 (or B2), and the negative to a ground point.
I then copy the values from Leuchte2SL VLB10 to Leuchte9FL LB39, as follows:-

channel > current value > new value
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimming Direction CD 8 > maximize (current) > maximize (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimming Direction EF 8 > maximize (current) > maximize (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimming Direction GH 8 > maximize (current) > maximize (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimmwert AB 8 > 0 (current) > 127 (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimmwert CD 8 > 0 (current) > 127 (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimmwert EF 8 > 0 (current) > 0 (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimmwert GH 8 > 0 (current) > 0 (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Fehlerort mittleres Byte DTC-DFCC 8 > 0 (current) > 49?? (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lampendefektbitposition 8 > 0 (current) > 48?? (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lasttyp 8 > not active (current) > 1 - LED Tagfahrlichtmodul Versorgung (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtansteuerung HD AB 8    > Always (current) > Always (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion A 8 > not active (current) > Daytime running lamps (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion B 8 > not active (current) > not active (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion C 8 > not active (current) > Standlicht allgemein (Schlusslicht: Positionslicht: Begrenzungslicht) (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion D 8 > not active (current) > Parking light left (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion E 8 > not active (current) > Blinken links aktiv (beide Phasen) (new)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion F 8 > not active (current) > not active (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion G 8 > not active (current) > not active (no change)
Leuchte8FL LB39-Lichtfunktion H 8 > not active (current) > not active (no change)

i'm not sure if this will b sufficient enough, and if i'll need to do additional coding.

any thoughts/advice?

That should be just fine.

Set dimmwert EF to 127 as well else the lights won’t flash out of phase of the indicators like you’ve asked them to.

(will only flash out of phase if drl are off, as AB then CD take priority)

or set EF dimming direction to minimise and leave dinmwert at 0 and have it in phase. So when the indicator is lit, it turns the drl off.
