Just got an Octavia IV estate - charging question

Featured Replies

Does anyone know how much it would cost to plug it into a home electrical socket?

Yes,

If your standard tariff for electricity is 27 pence a kWh then 27 pence each kWh.   So if you get 11 kWh of a charge that is £2.97

If you were to get a Off peak night time tariff of 9 pence a kWh and get 5 kWh charged in the off peak time then 45 pence.

If your electricity is about 33p/kWh and your car does about 50mpg, then the electricity works out at about half the price as running on petrol. So it's worth plugging in.

So far the car is averaging less than 50mpg in hybrid mode.

1st October the unit price of electricity dropped from 33 pence, which is why a gave the figure of 27 pence.

25-30 miles for under £3 if running in EV mode is OK really.

153 pence a litre unleaded , £6.95 a gallon.

Mine does about 47mpg on petrol alone with an empty battery.

that’s approx 15p a mile when fuel is around the cost it is now.

on electric only at 33p kwhr you need to be averaging above 2.5miles per kwhr to make it cheaper than the petrol.

on short journeys in cold weather, it can be as low as 1.5 miles kwhr.

At the current daft electric prices, it’s a close run thing on whether it’s cheaper to run petrol or electric. If you can get cheap electricity then it gets to be much cheaper of course.

I’ve not seen a public charger point yet that works out cheaper than burning petrol. (Apart from the free ones).

I’m paying 27p kwhr at home so it’s a no brainier for me now, electric miles are cheaper than petrol, but 12 months ago, i was paying 33p kwhr, and that was the point where the petrol and electric cost the same in winter, and electric marginally cheaper in the summer. Geeky i know, but when your employer gives you hmrc rates for fuel, every mpg / kwh mile  counts, or else you’re paying them to drive on business.

Driving in Low Emission zones with the cars that are only low emissions because of Kidology then maybe use the EV mode in them.

Like when they come in in Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen like it is now in Glasgow.

PS

There are some 7 kW chargers in Scotland under 25 pence a kWh and also free ones,  Charge Place Scotland. / Park & Rides and others.

Not Edinburgh City though which has ridiculous tariffs.

People do sit hours charging @ 7 or 11 kW with EV,s but when there are limited numbers people get peed off at a Hybrid sitting all day or night taking 3.6 kW.

Do you know if the Straiton park and ride does free charging? That's the nearest to me.
