VRS Purchase - what to look for?

Featured Replies

Hello all, I'm possibly going to view a 2015 VRS at the weekend (petrol) anything specific to look for? 30k on the clock and approved used from a dealer. Only thing of note atm is an advisory on the last MOT for a coolant leak, I'm aware of the thermostat housing/water pump issues with this engine but the garage have told me that the leak has been rectified, but they haven't given me any details yet of the exact nature of the leak, or what they did.

Silica bag in the coolant reservoir (don't want that)

DSG oil change (want that, even though it's probably not due until 40K miles)

Being 2015 it could have a MIB1 or MIB2 infotainment - if you want to use CarPlay or Android Auto then you need a MIB2

Plus all the usual stuff indicating a caring responsible owner...

Thanks Dave,

should have said that is a manual rather than DSG! I see there are loads of aftermarket upgrades for the info and that's something I'll look at later.

What was the purpose of a silica bag in the coolant?

Have to admit I'm somewhat sceptical of the coolant leak issue.  Although there are plenty of stories where I'm sure it is a genuine issue, I've personally had a dealership telling me I had a serious issue with a coolant leak and they wanted several hundred quid just to investigate it.  Unbeknownst to them I check my coolant level pretty frequently and in the 12 months prior to them telling me there was an issue the coolant level had remained rock solid and needed no top ups what so ever - I checked the day before the car went in.

So my reaction at the time was well wherever that coolant is coming from, it's not from my car.  Not heard any more about it since.

Make sure your heater works and you get hot air from all the vents.

You do need to know what was the cause, and fix, of the coolant leak.

My 2015 vRS TSI blew it's turbo, the first sign of the problem was a delay in heat getting into the cabin:

@Ian1975

What kind of aftermarket mods?

'Approved Used from a Dealers',   so are the mods no issue with the Approved Used Warranty, 'Factory approved hardware or software'?

Is it Serviced to Manufacturers Guidelines, Recommendation or Schedule so Spark Plugs on record as changed, brake fluid etc etc.?

PS

Is it the Master Technician you have spoken with or just the Workshop / Service Manager or a Salesperson.

Get the Full Service / maintenance & Warranty history in writing since a Skoda Approved Used Car.

& there is a nice check list now for the 'Rigorous Checks' that they carry out.

(Lost my Pig Flying picture.)

EDIT. Found it.  Now where is the Pinch of Salt one?

Thanks for the info! all interesting stuff to look out for!

Gaz, thanks for the links, glad you got it sorted but I was sorry to read about the other stresses you were having at the same time, must have been difficult for you.

Rooted, just the sales guy atm, but I'll be drilling down through all the p/work and finding the master tech if I go and view the car, advert and sales guy have confirmed a full dealer service history. Regarding the aftermarket mods, the car appears to be 100% standard currently, all I'm considering is upgrading the stereo to something android compatible at some point, but I also have a 2015 (non VRS) Octavia so I'm aware of the standard systems capabilities, but we all want to have something better!

@Ian1975Be sure you see everything and that Approved Used Warranty & that it is a Skoda one, because 8 years old going on 9 is unusual to be such.

See that Workshop Inspection document.

They bought it or took the trade in so they wanted to know the history.

A Full Main Dealer Service History does not mean much, just a History. What matter is what was actually done.
