Drifting - how ?

Featured Replies

last night I thought I'd have a little play on a very wide, very pen, very quiet roundabout ;) Switched off the ESP and gave it a little throttle in 2nd.

The rear endcame out nicelybut soon tucked back in because I got scared and corrected it with the steering. On the second "lap" I was determined to make it work so diddnt correct it - but this time I got scared when I seemed to be heading more towards the roundabout that actually going around it.

ESP shall remain on for the forseable future as it is clear Mr Needel has more talent than I do :D

Both attempts probably looked like I was having an accident from the outside but I was wondering - can you get drifting lessons ?

Before you start moaning about it, the roundabout was on an industrial estate at around 10pm, there was no danger to anyone else, no chance of hitting anything other than my own car, no animals were harmed and I know pratting around on a public road is a stupid thing to do

I assume you were trying this in the Nissan and not the Skoda?

 And it wasnt inspired by the Fast and Furious film we'd just been to watch... honest ;)

Get used to driving that car and the back end will come out when you've sussed out how it handles.......

...well it does on the MR2 now.

I've not really pushed the car yet as its only just clocked 700 miles! I hade flung it through some roundabouts etc. on a few occasions and it produces a very big grin with little effort at well below the speed limit :D

I too have had a little play - complete lap of a wet roundabout sideways :D

Need to turn all the systems off otherwise ESP says "enough" when the tail gets about 5-10 degrees out of line.

Needed to see how it behaved as it isn't my car and is driven by t'other half. Very safe with ESP on (just enough to give her a little scare ;) ) hooligan if you disable everything :D

Hooligan:D .

Just wait for the snow

This might help you get the best out of the Z ;) Make sure you budget for a new set of tyres though

Chris

Or get one of these.....

Had a good chat with the Japanese driver of this while I was at the Silverstone GP. They were promoting a drifting event the following weekend.

The guy was very chatty and very funny. All parts have to be available off the shelf, although the engines are blue-printed.

Most of his shirt sponsors were tyre companies - which made sense when he told us that the car went through 800 tyres last year!

Comment of the weekend was when we asked him to start it up - he said (and you have to imagine this with a Japanese accent) "No - I get b0llocking from Bernie Ecclestone if I do that".

He also managed to get in a cheesy pose with my mate just as my finger hit the shutter....

I would of thought that with the popularity of the drifting scene then there probably would be a course to teach you the basics but i would say practice is the best thing but not on public roads;) best bet would be on an airfield with a corner coned out so when you spin your not going to smash your wheel off on a curb,it all comes down to balance as you've found, too much power and your going to spin right round and not enough power and the car will straighten up,you have to learn to feather the throttle but it would take a long time to become an expert but with a small bit of practice you'd be able to kick the back out for a short time, the original Drift King a guy called keiichi tsuchiya is a legend and he is actually in the tokyo drift movie(he's the little japanese guy fishing on the dock while the main character is learning to drift the evo) and he has a dvd out on how to drift and is now a retired racer but does present and test drive many cars on hot version and best motoring(japans version of top gear i suppose) i have many of these dvd's and think there fantastic to watch,if your interested then do a search on the net, some dvd's may be available to download if you have a look but this is illegal so its up to you if you look

My first link was to a drift course, the last one to a drifting trackday - the forums in the middle were just so he could ask questions :D

Was your wife in the car at the time? I suspect you might want to learn when you're on your own, and buy a cheap set of spare rear wheels with cheap tyres!.

Where's the pictures of the Z then? I posted loads of my new toy

I think with cars like that when you realy get used to just what they can do, thats when the fun begins ;)

One of my mates at uni had a 2.0 Carlton (GSI replica) He often tried drifiting it around slippy roundabouts, but had a few 'moments' :D . He replaced it with a 3.6 Jag XJ40, which was very reluctant to go sideways, despite the power.

It can be done:

my dads old Omege 2.0 8v estate drfited nicely in the wet on a emtpy car park. :D

Despite what everyone claims, you *can* drift in a FWD ;) You just need lots more speed and plenty of hand brake action :D

Gawd, I wish we had another handling day organised... I'd be the first to sign up.

Gawd' date=' I wish we had another handling day organised... I'd be the first to sign up.[/quote']Sounds a good idea to me, I'd sign up for sure ;)
