Black Smoke

Featured Replies

Morning all, Newby here and I know this has been discussed before but not quite the same.

After much hunting, I've a problem that the usual answers found isn't covering. I've a 2016, 1.6tdi and it's kicking out black smoke for the first second of acceleration. The rest of the time under load it is clear! Mileage is a nice 236k but 180k of that has been at motorway speeds and mainly in 5th gear. NO DPF (yes, naughty but been that way for a few years), injectors removed/cleaned/new seals, new turbo, new MAF, premium fuel uses, new filters air/fuel/cabin/oil, very well serviced and no fault codes. The car failed its MoT on emissions (black smoke under load) and all has been done to cure it that I could think of. Boroscope shows a nice, healthy engine, too. MPG is still very good, no loss of power and no untoward smells. As I said, it only puts out an initial blat of smoke on first acceleration  then its clear but still a fail. It has passed 2 tests a year for the last 4 years and been spot on until now. Any ideas ? Toe.

Hi T. I had that with my Roomster,  turned out to be one degree out in the timing after cam belt change.

After redone all worked, no black smoke and acceleration was better.

Ah, could be it as no problems before the cam belt was done. As the DPF is no longer there, I'm fitting blanking plates on the egr valve this weekend and then I'll get the timing looked at. Many thanks.

The things that makes me think it may not be the timing is the fact the car runs, starts and drives really well. It pulls great, starts easily, warms up quickly, great mpg and has no flat spots whatsoever! Like I say, I'll fit the blanks and then get it to somebody who can check the ignition timing.
