Skoda octavia 2016 2.0 tdi starting problem

Featured Replies

Hi I’m in need of some help or any suggestions about my Skoda Octavia not starting turns over but not starting replaced battery one day before problem started no engine management lights not fault codes whatsoever any suggestions thanks

Hello Amelka :hi: - local I see.

Why was the battery replaced?

Was the new battery coded? (Was the car told it has a new battery?)

Have you got the correct battery? Was it replaced like for like?

Were the problems there before you replaced the battery? (I do see you've said 'one day before problem started')

When did you replace the battery?

Does the glow plug light come on with the ignition and go off a few seconds later?

Does the car have a service history?

Has anything else been changed or repaired around the same time as the battery?

Does the battery and starter turn the engine over as fast as you'd expect it to?

Where you say 'no fault codes  whatsoever' - what code reader is being used; as in is it a generic one (which could miss relevant codes) or VCDS/main dealer software?

I'll ask that a Mod considers moving your post to the Octavia 3 fora.

Hi Gaz yes I’m am the owner from new is high mileage the car was strangling to start couple times battery was having problems so changed to the same specifications star/stop as for as I know there was not coding as the car started with no problem thanks

So was it the original battery coming to the end of its life? (Quite reasonable at seven years old).

If not coded to the car, the car might be thinking it's still got the old, knackered battery in it.

Perhaps finding and contacting someone local with VCDS might be a good start.  With VCDS you can alert the car to it having had a new battery fitted:

Or failing that, get a Skoda/VAG friendly garage to have a look and see what's going on.

I have recovered the car to the garage my  mechanic is scratching his head they told me that they have ordered a new injector as they think one is stuck open but I don’t believe that, as for diagnostic he is using Snap On

Check the earth to the starter.

not seen it on a mk3, but seen other cars where a rusted earth bond (negative) to the starter meant it wouldn’t turn over.

it was cold today, are the glow plugs working?

Snap On reported a faulty injector?

I'd get a printout of the report.

No fault codes at all on dashboard.

Fault lights coming up on the dash report a very limited set of issues.  Nowhere near what may need investigating in your case.

What @cheezemonkhaiis alluding to is similar to my asking if it's turning over as fast as you'd expect.  Any corrosion around such a major earthing point can reduce the CCA (Cold Cranking Amperage) getting through, which in turn can reduce the rate at which the engine turns over.  On some cars (my old Superb was a good example) a certain cranking speed needs to be reached before firing will initiate.  In my Superb's case, I could flatten the battery trying to  start it, but if I put a jumper set on it it would then start straight away, every time.  As well as a visual inspection of the connections, I found a quick check was to bypass the earth strap with a jump lead - if the car then started, there was a good chance that earthing was the issue.

I think what @ords is getting at is whether a generic Snap-On reader is capable of identifying a faulty injector.  Given that you have at least three other injectors, you really need to know how they've concluded that it's one of them that's up the spout.  Injectors can be tested, and thinking one is stuck open is not the same as knowing one is stuck open.  You could be throwing money at the parts bin.

Are you using a garage with a good track record on VAG/Skoda?  Head scratching does make me wonder, when it's a case of using the right diagnostic equipment, and then eliminating the more obvious possible causes.

What's the car's mileage, and what are its typical journeys (short stop start, or long distance mile muncher)?
