Superb 4x4 2.0TDI drivetrain movement

Greetings from Finland. I have had a 2018 L&K estate Superb 4x4 for a couple of months now and it has been a great car overall, but it feels like there is some excess movement in the drivetrain/engine. Basically it feels like that the engine is rocking back and forth more than it should when accelerating from stand still or when slowing down for a complete stop in traffic. Downshifts are also more noticable when braking harder than normal. Otherwise the transmission works very well with no abnormal behavior. I tried to search for similar topic but could not find any (may be also lack of skill when using the search engine). Has anyone had this kind of experience with their Superb? 

Could be the (dogbone) gearbox mount.

 

Had similar knock when mine was remapped, cured by fitting an 034 Motorsport insert into the rubber mount.

 

(Mine was a type 2)

Thanks for the post. So I guess the rubber parts of the mount goes bad over time and enables the engine and transmission to move more? Other end of the mount is attached to the subframe and other end is connected to the transmission?

Yes, as with any rubber mount they deteriorate over time, probably easier to just replace the whole dogbone c/w new bush.

 

This is on a MKII but the principle is the same

3:24 shows you the full dogbone mount, the left side bolts to the gearbox and the right goes to the cross member

Yes, this is definitely something I will check out. Is the round rubber part pressed in to the subframe, or is it also replacable without any significant effort or hydraulic press?

Yes that one will be pressed in, not looked into that one in too much detail (my car was brand new when I fitted the insert, so nothing 'wrong' with it other than not being stiff enough)

I would imagine the gearbox side will wear much quicker due to being smaller and getting warmer so you may get away with just doing the dogbone?

 

You really need to remove the undertray and use a pry bar to see where the play is all coming from.

"Into the rubber mount" and the photos describing an "insert", is that what you are speaking of? Is it something that can be fitted into the existing mounting without removing it in a press?

 

A link or photograph of the item in place would answer my question.

Our posts overlapped, from what you have said I am guessing the insert is a part that bolts on and fills the voids, is that correct?

Will do so in the near future. Seems that the dogbone itself costs only like 40 or so pounds on Autodoc. Need to look also for the insert.

Yes an 034 Motorsport insert into the rear rubber mount (Version 2 in my case).

In Joel's case it is probably just down to the worn front bush in the dogbone itself though.

 

(My car was pushing 505 Nm after the remap)

Thanks, thats exactly how I had visualised it and was going to describe it but then I thought it might be bonded to the rubber, I should have known better, my father manufactured Silentbloc bushes so in the recesses of my memory I know all the materials surface treatments and processes, aluminium was never involved, maybe its possible today.

 

It looks like a good solution to high torque applications but not as you say to be used with a softened weakened bush.

Did you fit upper and lower inserts or just lower, and did it add any NVH?

Just the lower one. 
 

I would be lying if I said it didn’t increase the NVH, but it really was minimal and it stopped the engine from knocking under hard acceleration.
