Facelift VRS 230 exhast upgrade

Featured Replies

Evening all,

Had my facelift VRS 230 for almost a year now and so far have been loving it, however the stock exhaust is whisper quiet, no character whatsoever. Now I see everywhere people recommending Miltek and Scorpion catback systems, yet these are a little brash for me, each to their own and all but I'm not after earth shaking, neighbour waking volume, just a bit of flavour.

The sound I'm after is much like that of a VRS 245, slight overrun burble, bit of a deeper exhaust note and, having a DSG box in mine, I'd love to hear some DSG farts when burying it. Would even love a similar sound to a golf R stock exhaust. I've gone for an OEM+ styling approach for my car and the almost EV like exhaust note just lets it down imo, but the outright shout of a miltek or similar would be too far I think.

Have any likeminded people out there achieved this with your cars, and what did you change to achieve this? If anyone knows the differences between the 230 and 245 exhaust systems ( ie different back boxes, etc) that may also be a step in the right direction. It's worth mentioning that my model does not have the GPF so I don't need to worry about that silencing things further.

Thanks in advance!

A back box delete or smaller rear back boxes might be the ticket for you. A centre resonator delete is common but makes it sound farty and raspy and may cause some drone.

I seem to remember reading that the 230 has a slightly different exhaust to a 220 in that it's actually a tad noisier but I might be wrong. My 220 is certainly quiet!

Yeah I was thinking smaller back boxes might get me closer to where I wanna be. I did also see people were removing the resonator, but like you said it seems like it creates a lot of drone, and in a car that is already lacking in sound proofing I think it'd be deafening. Been considering biting the bullet and going for a full catback but that price is eye-watering.

I also saw about the 230 having a louder exhaust than the 220 when I bought mine, was driving it home thinking the exhaust seemed pretty tame for something sporty. Then read further into it, in the pre-facelift cars the 220 was the standard VRS model, and the 230 was the "sportier" version with uprated exhaust and more toys, then when the facelifted models came along, the 230 became the standard and the 245 got all the toys. Not that it would have influenced my decision about buying it but wish I'd have realised it sooner. Much like your 220, my car is annoyingly whisper quiet 🤣

Thanks for your advice bud!

If you go back box delete Id be interested to hear what it sounds like. Its something I flirt with the idea of but classically everytime I think about it something else comes up!

You are right, full systems are expensive and I'm not really sure they are not droney either. I like that it's quiet enough on the whole and as you said, with the lacking sound proofing it would be amplified.
