Timing belt replacement interval query.

Featured Replies

I had my timing belt replaced from new at 86000 miles or so and planned to follow this up with the recommended four-year/40000 miles replacement interval.

However, when I took the car in to Halfords for the replacement the garage boss said he wouldn't do it as it would have plenty of miles left in it and he didn't want me wasting hundreds of pounds.

I've since read that they are good for 140000 km or so  - which is 86000 !  Do you agree with this ? I have a 2016 Octavia Estate and do about 20000 miles a year.  I'm currently on 127800 miles.

Thank you.

What engine?

VAG UK engines are now no time limit and 120k miles (this varies depending who you ask).  Where did you get 4 years and 40k from?

Can't remember ! I thought it was on official Skoda info but not really sure. I will go with the 120k miles (give or take ) > Thanks for your reply.

I can confirm at least for the Octavia 2L TDI, mine has just had the timing belt replaced (recommended by the dealer at 200k km) at 215k.

It is bloody expensive to change it here... so I wouldn't want to change it earlier than it was needed.

Assuming the 1.6tdi Octy is the same as the 1.6tdi Superb then it is indeed 40k miles, however it was originally 80k but for some reason the frequency got halved by Skoda.( presumably some early age failures reported )  I still stick to 80k with mine though which is often enough IMO.
