First road trip. Low revs. Tyre warning.

Featured Replies

Finally took my octavia VRS on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne. Cruise set at 113kms. Revs noted at below 2000rpm about 1700rpm which i was very surprised i thought it would be in the 2000. The car felt extremely smooth and controlled,  very comfortable.  I'm very happy i broke the car in and had oil and filter change at 1500kms. 9 hour trip felt like just 2 hours. Was very very happy with it. Gave a fuel economy reading of 6.2l/100km with city driving included. This car is best on a highway. The only thing was, when i went passed 120km for a few brief moments a warning flashed saying something like top speed for winter tyres exceeded. I believe they are Bridgestone but I'll need to take a look at them more closely.  Do others get similar warning like this as well. I'll be interested to know.

Just search in settings for winter tyre warning option and turn it off.

- or set it to a point you don't usually wish to exceed.

Ok thanks,  i will do that.  I didn't know that was an option. By the way is it normal for revs to sit that low,  even with accelation it was pretty low.  I guess I'm not used to it.

Oh OK i have that option as well. I guess i need to refer to the manual to see how.  Thank you too

I assume you have something like a 2.0 litre TSI 245 or more - I only have a lowly 1.4 150PS - these engines have very good torque and yours will likely have a pretty high final gear ratio.

I reckon Škoda have prioritised the gear ratios for low emissions and lower fuel consumption, hence lower revs when cruising.

Is your a manual 'box or auto/DSG? From memory, at steady motorway speeds the revs in a loan DSG I had a while back were lower than my manual 'box.

Yes that's right 2.0 L TSI 245hp. Ut has a pretty high gear ratio wasn't expecting it,  i guess never experienced it so high in previous cars. What does your one sit at

Yes it would seem so,  which is a good thing. I didn't try sports mode though,  i wonder if that would have made a difference. I had it on comfort or eco. Next time I'll try normal, sport and  individual. I wonder though do that drive modes actually make a difference.

DSG 7 speed. Oh ok even lower than the manual. What was your experience with it,  did you like it , did you have any issues with it.

Sports mode with DSG will move the shift points up the rev band a fair bit, and should sharpen the throttle and steering response - the dampers too, if you have active suspension (DCC?)

From a very long time ago, I seem to recall that cars shipped to OZ from the Mother Country were often identical to home model - apart from being given a lower final drive gear ratio.

I can't recall actual RPM figures of my Octavia at 80 plus - er - '72MPH officer, why do you ask'? - but the M6 1.4 is a pretty lazy cruiser - considering having to change-down for an overtake is extremely rare for me.

It was a very comfortable and easy drive; the 'box would change readily down if I needed the extra rpm for acceleration. I was surprised that the DSG 'box was as economical as my manual.
