Question regarding alloys and warranty

Featured Replies

I'm about to purchase a used approved Kamiq. The compromise for myself is it's riding on 18-inch wheels. Where I live in Scotland, there is a fair bit of snow through the winter months and I usually have a set of all-season tyres. The all season tyres for the 18 wheels are too expensive. Instead, I'd prefer to downsize to 16-inch either alloy or steel wheels, however, I have a few questions I'd appreciate a hand with, listed below.

Q1: Will my warranty to be voided if I order after market alloys, providing they are the approved size wheel and tyre?

Q2: If I were to order new Škoda alloys, how would I go about that? I saw someone mention that it's cheaper to order from the accessory catalogue... (A brief description of how I entertain this would be really helpful)?

Q3: How easy would it be to sell the OEM Škoda 18-inch alloys?

Any input is genuinely appreciated, thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Briskoda is a good place to sell Skoda stuff in the for sale section, eg Wheels & Tyres.

Maybe even get a swap.

Your manufacturers warranty is not going to be void with after market alloys or steel wheels fitted.

I'd be a tad concerned with Q3 because if your goal is to sell the current 18" tyres and alloys,  then I'd have thought that's likely to work out far more expensive than just replacing the tyres.  You really would be limiting the car's appeal when you come to sell if you're trying to flog a higher end model with basic ( wrong ) alloys on it. Worse still if they're steel wheels !  I'd have thought you'd be much better off buying 16" rims + tyres now, replace those original 18" alloys when you sell then sell the 16" rims and tyres. Or keep them for your next car.

Me?  I've just had a very quick look around at prices.  What are you hoping to save price wise by going down a size or two alloys?  The price differentials don't seem to justify changing the alloys.

For example, Camskill are currently selling Maxxis 215/45/18 All seasons for £100. So that'd be £400 + £20 delivery + say £15 a corner to have them fitted  so just under £600 ?  How much are you reckoning on spending on tyres for 16" rims?

By the way, I had 215/45/18 on my Seat Ateca. It seems to be a popular size with VW group cars, unfortunately not with other manufacturers which is likely to be the reason tyre suppliers can place a slight premium on that size. When I had my car ( 2016 ), there were only a couple of manufacturers sold all-season in that size.

There's six different 16" alloy rims for the Kamiq listed here

https://eshop.skoda-auto.cz/alu-kola/c/alloyWheels?sort=priceAsc&q=%3AscoreDesc%3AcarType%3AKamiq%2B%282019%2B%29#

Here's two of those 16" alloy rims. The format xxx071xxx for the OEM part number shows that it's from the accessory catalogue. Hence, their price is about £150 each. Just give the OEM part number to a VAG parts department and they should be able to give you the UK price.

I have a question 4 for you @ambientsound

What if I declare the change on my insurance?

It's the right thing to do of course but they may wish to see a Certificate of Conformity. Thats not the end of the world if you consider this while choosing/buying a set.

All UKCA approved products will have one but I doubt seller get asked for it very often such is the lack of knowledge.

See this from the California forum.

If you find the Skoda rims expensive, then look at others eg Borbet.  They have a handy tool on their website which offers compatibility (same bolts, no adapters etc)

I have a Seat Arona, came with 215/45 R18, and still have the original summer tyres on them, which have done about 30k miles (5.5 year old) still got about 4mm tread on all 4 (they get switched around each change, deepest tread front left as it wears fastest due to roundabouts, slowest wear is rear right).  No cracking either as not used in cold weather when micro cracks start

I have 205/60 R16 Goodyear Ultragrip 9+ on Borbet Y rims, basically same car as Kamiq under the bodywork (as is VW T-cross) so wheel choices are interchangeable.  It is more comfortable on poor roads on the 16s than 18s
