Towing?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I need to tow my mums Vectra 2.0 to a local dealer to have it's MAF replaced. I haven't towed anything before, but first of all can my car tow that much weight okay?

Any advice will be appreciated:thumbup:

Ummm, would have said, no - but if you ensure you take it easy it should manage it eventually. Was hoping you drove a TDI, in which case it would have been totally fine. I towed a seat cordoba using a towing arm with mine, and it was fine. Just don't use too much clutch slip and try to keep steady slow momentum. If I really had your car though, I would honestly try and borrow any other car that is a diesel, preferably turbo'd.

One thing I forgot once was to make sure the towed car had the steering lock disengaged - it ended up on top of a roundabout - make sure your mum's got the key in and turned to the accessory position!

Might be worth getting a towing bar as ropes can snap. I've towed a few cars now with my fabia, ranging from a ford fiesta to a rover 800 and it pulled them all with no issues but then mine is a diesel.

I guess it's possible just take your time look well ahead and try not to stop or start to quickly.

Though like Jason said I'd see if you could borrow a diesel.

try disconnecting the MAF sensor on the Vectra , the car may run OK enough to be driven to the stealers , therefore no towing required

No If removed she wont start. The Dullest car in the world has clocked over 100k though so no real biggie. I don't have a MAF in my car though, why is that?

I would have to say with the engine you car has (being that isn't a diesel), I wouldn't like to try to tow a vectra due to the weight of the car.

however as long as there are no hills and you take it easy you should be ok.

I cant see it being a problem towing the vectra at all. When my astra diesel broke down a few years ago we towed it home using my mums 750cc Fiat Panda and nothing broke or fell off the FIAT   it took quite a bit of time but then it would towing a car like that for 30miles

In an emergency I towed a transit tipper (loaded) with digger trailer attached up a motorway slip road (Junction 10 of M25) as he broke down right as you came off the M25 I reckon thats close to 4 if not 5 tonne! Used a fixed bar and kept it very slow.

The wifes 1.4 auto has towed my TDI

The fabia makes a great tug but you are best using a fixed bar and keep the speed down........

Thanks for the Advice guys, I succesfully towed it to the dealership. It was raining so I was getting mega wheelspin that was virtually impossible to keep down, but once on the move the 8v is quite torquey, It pulled it very well.

I pulled a rover 400 with my 1.2 ibiza no problem, dont know if that helps.....
