Lost bolt (battery tray), what spec?

Featured Replies

Changing the battery on my superb, I dropped the bolt that clamps the battery tray into the engine bay. Does anyone know, or know where I can get, the specs of this bolt? It took a 13mm socket.

I could try and take the plastic undertray off and have a better look for it, but can't easily get under the car. Is this a simple thing to do? Thanks for any advice.

I think it's the best thing to do. It will take you less time to remove the undertray, than go to the dealer, buy it (if available in stock), come back home and put it back in placE.

Additionally, you'll save some fuel and £! ;)

To get under the car and remove the undertray, you need to raise the front wheels by something like 5-6". If you don't have ramps, you can try stacking thick wood boards, or bricks. But if you use bricks, be careful, they don't "nose up"... This could scratch your front bumper... It should not happen if you use short ones

It is an M8x35 (1.25mm pitch) and is collard so has a built in washer. The VAG number is  N 106 756 02 and they retail at £2.34 inc VAT.

I mean, if i dropped a bolt into the engine bay I would be finding it rather than forgetting it.

that way, you know its not gone anywhere that will cause damage such as fall out and puncture a tyre or be in the engine somewhere it shouldnt and cause further damage.

And plus, surely its easier to fish out a bolt than it is to boot up the computer, come on the forum, wait for a reply, find the bolt size, go to a hardware shop, buy a new bolt, fit new bolt?

I don't do very much car maintenance now, but I did when I was younger and I bought two flexible metal rods with handles on the top.  At the other end, one had a magnet and the other had a grab similar to those you see in amusement arcades that you open and close from the handle.  I've had them for about 50+ years and have helped in situations like this, though back then there was much more room around engines.  I can't remember what car it was, but there was one where, being tall,  I could put one leg on the ground through the engine compartment to make it easier to work on some areas!
