85x Sportline Plus - Canton Sound System very poor

Featured Replies

New member :)

Picked up a new 85x a couple of weeks ago with the Advanced pack added.

In comparison to my previous Seat Ateca's standard sound system the Canton is not much of an improvement.

Even setting the subwoofer to +9 makes almost no difference to it being at -9 and there's no great increase in bass.

Compared to a previous Honda CRV with a sub it's completely lacking in any bottom end.

Took it in to dealer who compared it to a 69 Superb and admitted the Superb was certainly louder but that it's just the way they are now!.

I've asked on a couple of other Enyaq forums and most people say anything over +3 makes the boot and rear view mirror vibrate (as the Honda used to do).

I've had the sub out of the boot and it's a 6" (15cm) speaker in a plastic box!.

Is there anyone near the Durham/Newcastle/Sunderland area who has an Enyaq with the Canton system I could compare it to?

The sub on most VW group models, including the upgraded system if you'd chosen it on the Ateca ( Beats? )is of similar design. The subs are circular, designed to sit in the spare wheel , hence save space. In older cars, the Canton sub was a small rectangular plastic box. I don't know the Enyaq so don't know which subwoofer design you have but here are my thoughts.

Spare Wheel sub: Sound quality is not great, it's pretty crap IMO but you certainly notice it's impact on bass the higher it's set. I have mine set to +6 on the Kodiaq and anything above makes it too intrusive.

Rectangular sub: I heard that on a mk3 Octavia and it's exactly as you describe. IMO it was a waste of space.

Of course there are other factors that could explain that but I suspect Skoda use the same Canton Amp on the Enyaq as they do on every other car. ( Maybe it's reduced power to save battery :D )

I owned a 2016 Ateca and can't remember having any complaint given it was a bog standard system. I had plenty of room for complaint with the std Octavia sound system, but the Canton I specced in my Kodiaq ( 2020 - the newer Canton system ) Is so much of an improvement over both. It's not just the sub ( which as I say isn't up to much ), but the front speakers offer much more clarity at higher volumes.

What type of sub is used in an Enyaq? Where is it located?  I'm looking on the internet for pics but I can't see any of an Enyaq with subwoofer.

Thanks for the reply :)

It's sat in a rectangular well in the under the boot floor, the speaker is in a platic box contained in a polystyrene outer shell.

Some better photos of the actual unit,

Thanks for that - never knew. Would defo need an Enyaq member to comment on sound.

I'm only going on theory here so may well be wide of the mark, but everything in there looks to be contained which is compounded by the fact they cover it with polysytene. 🤪

Think of it logically - bass is just air movement. That box looks to be 100% sealed - at least the plastic subs they use in other models has a hole for that air to escape. However any sound that is produced by your box is immediately going to be absorbed by the polystyrene cover. There may not be much space but in other cars, that air has somewhere to go underfloor. ( The lack of space will be the reason that when I turn up the sub over 6, then the sound gets muffled ).

Just looking at your setup, I'd never guess that could produce any bass at all, however they may be using some kind of technical wizardry I don't know about.

Sorry can't help any further.

No problem, you've been a lot more helpful than either Skoda UK or the 3 dealers I've tried.

Mine said nothing wrong.

Skoda Newcastle said talk to Skoda UK (who had already told me to talk to them)

And Skoda Darlington said they could have a look but it's £126 for non-warranty inspection, it's only 3 weeks old!!

Think I'll just have to accept I've wasted over £2000 on the Advanced pack and got a cr@p sound system.  The HUD is nice, heated windscreen isn't needed with car pre-heating and the heated rear seats will never be used.

People buy Canton because they specifically want better sound. If the width of the Enyaq boot is anything like the Kodiaq, I'd have sacrificed one of the side rearmost areas that goes in to the wing, and built / molded the sub enclosure there. If the occasion did arise you needed the space then the speaker would be removable. If the speaker was large enough they may get away without having to port it, but even if it was the same 6" speaker ( they could even fit a larger 9 x 6 to give more surface area ) then they could use the whole boot to move air.

Unless I'm missing something very obvious, that's a really daft location for any speaker.

I sympathise with the 'packs' .  One of the reasons I bought Skodas was because you could tailor the car with the options you wanted, but everyone, including BMW, now adopt the 'pack' model of selling.  It's like being forced to buy a tin of Quality Street when all you wanted was a caramel toffee. :D

I agree, and also about the Quality Street!, luckily I can get the Strawberry and Purple ones in bags on their own :)

I'll email Skoda and see what they say, probably tough luck that's the way they are (same as my dealer told me).

Once again thanks for all the help :)

Had a bit of a play with this this morning.
With the polystyrenr box removed there's a small increase in the output from the sub. Still barely noticeable with the front speakers in use.

If you set the sound focus to the rear it makes a more noticeable difference as the rear speakers are quite poor and very lacking in bass.

Centering the focus brings the front speakers back in and these overpower the sub.

The sound isn't terrible but for a £2035 upgrade pack I really was expecting something much better.

Never got why people worry about radio sound quality when you are driving round in a metal box, on a loud tarmac or even concrete road with rumble strips and lorrys , buses, motorbikes and boy racers with loud exhausts near you!

Hi m8

Ive got a superb L&K with Canton and it's poor compared to my old Golf

I bought (from here) a new cable for the sub as it seemed the polarity was swapped over. It improved it but not by much

I'm expecting my 24 model 85x coupe in the next month or so from Pulman in Durham - Happy to compare or help where I can - not sure where you are with this now?

  • Author

Thanks, no further forward really.

Pulmans sales manager admitted it was very poor then after I raised a complaint with Skoda UK said there was nothing wrong with it.

The actual Sub has very little output, it's only really audible with the front speakers off, as soon as you fade them back in it disappears and the bass from the front and centre speaker takes over.

After blasting it for 6 months it's improved very slightly, what I now do is put the tracks I want to use in the car through a program called Audacity

and boost the bass by 6db then save them to my mobile before using them.

I'm afraid I won't be going anywhere near Pulman Durham ever again!, they used to be a lot better than their VW branch, I bought a couple of Yeti's from them previously.

I'm not due to change cars until Jan 2027 (Motability) but unless Skoda have improved the software and phone system I think I'll be looking elsewhere.

On the good side, the HUD is very good, the Matrix headlights work well and I'm getting about 3.5 miles per kWh while not making any attempt at economy!.

Winter range was about 220, now I'm getting about 300 on the guess-o-meter :)

Regards,

Jeff :)

Hi Jeff

Is your's the 2024 model with the new software?

I'm not expecting great things with Canton but it was part of the package. As I said, years ago I had a VW gold Estate and tehir Dynaudio was way superior with proper punch and shake to the bass.

The sub in my superb estate is behind the nearside back seats under a huge wooden shelf and the only benefit of feeling any low frequency is for my dogs when they travel otherwise it's pretty rubbish. I even went to Autosounds in Newcastle to enquire about a custom amp or sub but it just seemed OTT

The bass loss in yours also sounds like some kind of amp crossover issue

My expeience with Skoda UK was dreadful but most of it was during Covid. I think with things like this, they're not going to do anything.

Anyway, looking forward to full electric, lower tax and a change of motor

Thanks

R

Hi,

Yes it's the 2024 with version 4.0 software, I know 4.1 is out now but so far no sign of an update.

The running costs are just stupidly low!, I don't bother using Eco mode or make any real attempt at economy and I'm still getting about 3.5 miles per kWh

so using Octopus Intelligent Go that's 2p a mile! or about 325 MPG :)

Small update,  having nothing better to do I cut the guides off the sub connetor and reversed the connection.

Very little difference at all.

I've came to the fairly obvious conclusion it's just cheap and nasty pretend subwoofer!.

I have the car for another 30 months so I may take a trip to Autosounds and see what they suggest.

I don't want masses of car rattling bass (it rattles on its own anyway!) just something with a decent clean thump!

A seperate underseat sub may do the job.
