Odd clutch problem, any thoughts ??

Featured Replies

Car is a 2010 Octavia Scout 2.0 Diesel PD.  Its on 261500 miles, owned from new , always serviced when variable calls for it + oil & filter approx 1/2 way between services, on its 3rd clutch

Yesterday I did a 570 Mile drive there and back

Car faultless going,  It was only about 10 miles on each journey on normal roads, the rest M5 & M6  ( Taunton to J38 truckstop in the lake district )

Returning as I got to the M5 / M6 interchange after many miles in top I went to change gear, no resistance until the pedal was about 25mm from the floor, pedal stayed down and had to pull it back up with my foot, a few more changes after that and the pedal always returned but there was still only resistance for the last 25mm. From then on I left it in top and set the cruise on 90 only slowing for roadworks and  when traffic dictated it.  Came off the M5 at Taunton and it was still just resistance for the last 25 mm but as I drove through the city it slowly improved and by the time I had covered about 6 miles home it had returned to normal. Today its been perfect.

Im assuming its a heat related combined with old age issue but anyone any other thoughts and more importantly is it the sign of another problem starting to develop.

Thanks in advance for any help

I have an 58 1.9tdi and it did the same as well as an old Volvo940. They both started doing it randomly. Foot would go to the floor but pedal wouldn't return. Pulled it up with my foot and seemed to get better especially if I pumped it. Eventually the master cylinder started leaking fluid which I didnt notice as it was been collected on the undertray and then clutch went completely due to low fluid. It was only when it got winched onto the recovery truck the fluid  trickled out from underneath. I reckon that the seals were failing and the fluid was pushing past them. Changed it myself which isn't that easy. Its one of those parts that you can see but can't quite reach. If I remeber correctly its a push on snap fitting for the pipe from the reservoir. I am pretty sure there was a rubber sealing  grommet that normally sticks in the old one so you don't notice it and the new one didn't come with a replacement. Make sure the grommet is there before you fit it otherwise it will leak. It could also be the slave but mine was the master. Hope it helps
