Oil.... should it be there?

Featured Replies

When taking my MAF sensor out to clean, I noticed a gathering of oil on the flat surface, as circled in green.

I then removed the large hose as circled in red and found a layer of oil around the inside of the hose and on the butterfly flap, etc in the metal thing (sorry - not sure what it is).

My car seems to be lacking from any turbo input these days. For a while it was useless, and then I popped it into a dealer to the get the brake fluid changed and a new hydraulic clutch pipe put in. It was then back to normal for a few days, and since then has returned to its useless state. I struggled to keep up with a 1litre Micra coming up the Ridgeway from Weymouth a few days ago :-(

Any ideas? Another turbo failure? I had the MAF, n75 valve and turbo replaced about a year ago when the car was lacking in power then.

Vag-com is not currently reporting any issues, but did last week show a grounding issue with the MAF.

Cheers,

Matt

You will get oil in there as the crankcase ventilates into the inlet system.

Ok... so that takes me back to the original problem then - the lack of any turbo then....

Anything else I can look at, or do I need to give up and let a dealer have a look?

(still went like a dog after I cleaned the MAF last night)

Didn't you say you got an old turbo from a write off?

Do you still have your old turbo? If so it could be time to get it cleaned off, and if not then maybe you need to get the car to a turbo/diesel injection specialist rathewr than a dealer. Dealers are good, but usually want to change whole parts. The turbo people will be dealing with that apsect every day and will probably know what can and can't be fixed/replaced. i know allards are good,b ut they are also miles away.

It did come from a write off (via a skoda dealer!) and had only done about 10k miles, iirc.

I am working in Boscombe Down (just north of Salisbury).... There is a turbo place over near Ringwood that I did phone last time, but never got around to visiting. I have to say this car is getting to be rather unreliable... :-(

Where is allards?

I have to go down to Plymouth tomorrow, and then North Yorkshire next Friday - all without a turbo..

Afriad I don't have the old turbo.... I had to swap it for the replacement one so the stock levels were correct..... (I wonder if the garage still have it....?!)

I'd visit the turbo specialists mate.

They will have it off and clean, especially if you take the cleaning guide from here, in no time. They might be able to tell you wahts up if it isn't that too.

I've changed sticking turbos on cars with less than 10k on, no gurantee it was all ok.
