Emissions plate value?

Hi all, new on here, so apologies if this is in the wrong place..I have a 2005 Octavia mk2, 1.9tdi, with 160000 on the clock. Ive recently changed area, and took the car for the first mot in my ownership to an unknown to me testing station, which  was a "connected" one..(new to me!) The computer read plate value as 0.80 1/m, it averaged 1.45 1/m. So failed, on just that..I cant believe its game over, its a tidy car with an almost full history, and has passed the last 4 tests with only minor advisories, i dont have previous printouts for emissions though. My old testing station used to say on my previous tests with other cars, if he couldnt read or see the values, it was tested at a different level, most things passed like this..Is there anything i can do to save my car? Ie, retest at a non connected station maybe? Please help..

Thanks all

Is there a manufacturer's plate visible in the engine bay with this value written on it?

This is the relevant page from the test manual, with some relevant-to-you bits highlighted.

If there's no manufacturer's plate with that 0.8 on it, it should have been tested against 3.0 per meter standard, as I read it.

I used to put a bottle of https://www.forteuk.co.uk/product/diesel-specialist-injector-cleaner/  into half a tank of fuel and go for a twenty minute run up the motorway prior to a retest after a mondeo 03 plate failed on emissions. Also check the air filter is clean.

Always passed second time.

I think all MOTs are "Connected" now

Hi Pete, all that I can find that looks anything relevant under the bonnet is this?

No, that's just the aircon refrigerant spec.

If I were you I'd have a really good look around the bay in daylight, and find the manufacturers plate, try nearside towards the front, but could be anywhere. It may or may not have a smoke figure on it. If not, you may be OK.

Ah ok, but I have looked before and found nothing resembling the plate that my other cars have had. I think with this connected mot malarkey the tester puts in the reg and it automatically sets the value from some database..I'm thinking maybe visit an older style station for retest.. I so hate this big brother nonsense..😟

"year 5" is a bit cryptic when the actual age of the vehicle is very relevant in this matter.

I am of the opinion that any 19TDi will be a PD engine and should be tested to the higher limit.

@Clarkypainter can you confirm the year of manufacture and what engine code your vehicle has?

The wording of the manual doesn't give any latitude to do anything but use the smoke figure off the plate if found, or the default 3.0 (for your turbodiesel) if not.

This is the example plate they mention, with smoke figure in bottom right corner:

HI stonekeeper, thanks for replying..I was  recommended some stuff from Wynns, which Ive double dosed into  a couple of gallons of diesel, also to cane the nuts off it for a few miles before retest, get it really hot.. from what i can make out, all new mot stations have to be connected, but older ones as long as they havent changed hands can stay as they are...Thank You.

The plate you are looking for is similar to this

Usually inside a Door frame?

Ah yes, I'm familiar with this, my LT35 van has it, but the plate value is scratched and unreadable..Its always tested at the highest value, forgotten what that is, but its never had an issue with emissions, on nearly 400,000 miles! Definitely nothing resembling this anywhere on the Octy...

Ok, got you.. but nothing resembling this anywhere on the car, definitely. Think I'll just re test somewhere else..🤞

There'll be one somewhere, probably obscured by 'stuff' in the bay. If it can't be seen without disassembly (or doesn't have a smoke figure, or it is unreadable), again you're probably in the clear.

Hi JR, on the logbook its regd May 2005, there is also this..Skoda Octavia Ambient TDI pd 8v..

Something else i feel relevant is this...Co2 (g/km)  138 G/Km..

Bottom part of the passenger door b Pillar?

Have a glance at my reply to JR, re. 138 G/Km?

CO2 % and g/km are two different calculations

Damn, found it.. passenger doorshut..it says 0.8, so I guess I'm knackered..It might magically dissapear or become illegible is my only hope/option...😟

Hmm. Well its certainly not illegible now.

 But headed that way..😅

I wouldn't risk making life more complicated before taking the simple steps to make it cleaner

CO2 is neither measured at, nor relevant to MOT.

CO, carbon monoxide, is measured at MOT against limits on petrol cars only, and is often muddled with CO2, carbon dioxide by folk on forums.

@Clarkypainter @Breezy_Pete In any event both CO and CO2 are colourless gases, and not the "black smoke" that the "new MoT station" supposedly measured a value for.

Apologies  i was confused i thought it was regarding Co2 but now realise it's only a test for emissions that are actually harmful to the environment..

"A diesel emission test measures ‘opacity’ which refers to the density of particles that exit the exhaust. Light is used to measure opacity, which an emission analyser uses the data to calculate an opacity reading. The ‘plate value’ of a car is used during a diesel emission test. This holds the manufacturer’s data for the level at which the car must be below in order to pass an emission test."

"  An emission test for a petrol car measures the gasses that exit the exhaust. The required reading must be within specified limits of the vehicle."
