GPS Issue - is it Aerial, Amp or connection? Superb Mk3 2017 Estate/Combi

Featured Replies

Hi fellow Skoda enthusiasts - I am after some friendly advice.

I jumped back in the car last w/e after a previous days drive out to the Brecon Beacons - and this morning, the car still thinks I am there!!!

I ned to get the SatNav working as I use t for work.

Its been absolutely faultless since I got the car with 34K on the clock, back in Nov 2020

We are now at 114K

It hsnt missed a beat - just working as it should.

Turned on Infotainment for a biz trip to Poole and, SatNav showing I am still in Brecon!!!!

Thought, that weird?

So did an Infotainment reset - power held down for 30S - came back to life.

Problem still exists.

Is this a known issue.

What might be causing this?

I would think its probably the GPS aerial, but I understand that there is also an Aerial Amp somewhere.

Before I go removing the headliner, swapping out bits, can anyone suggest n easy way for me to determine where the problem may lie?

Is this a trip to my main dealer, or a good auto electrician?

Does anyone know where the Aerial Amp is on the Estate?

I suppose I could get a screen GPS aerial and try this in the back of the HU and work my way back to the aerial itself.

Any ideas or support info would be so appreciated.

Thanks for sharing a great community!!!

does pointer moves?

in my previous MY16 Mk3 i had two times problem when pointer were in motion, just several kms from actual position.

simple reboot of Columbus didn't help, had to visit dealer.

Might be worth a complete reset, ie disconnect battery for 30 minutes

No, still not working after I tried this. I am convinced its either an aerial connection or faulty aerial base.

Can anyone provide the P/N for this aerial - my vehicle is a 2017, SEL Executive model, Estate, 2.0TDi 150 Maual. I have factory Sat Nav fitted.

Can anyone assist please????

It would be best to remove the shark fin and check part number. You’ll be able to check the connectors whilst there.

Thats a good shout - is there a guide on how to remove the headlining corectly - I presume just need to lower the rear part of the headlining?

Not sure tbh, someone’s bound to have made one even if it’s for a golf or so as it’ll somewhat similar

speaking of golf, have you searched for something like “vw golf mk7 gps position incorrect”, there’s a few posts with similiar problems to you, someone’s got fixed after changing head unit completely eek. He had it in with VW who changed antenna etc but didn’t help.

So if I were you I’d try disconnecting and reconnecting antenna and connectors to head unit (I believe some of them go to the unit in glove box)

Another thing, is your compass showing correctly?

Will check and reply.....

Also have you had it checked for codes?

One other thing which is worth a shot, if your maps aren’t update to date, update them as it does a proper reboot of satnav, I guess you’ve updated them before? If not there is a guide on here I can point you to

I think I updated them a little while ago.... but wont hurt checking - what the latest SatNav software version? I also tried the battery disconnect for 30 mins - came back the same - I can input destination and it will try to guide me there but starting destination certainly isnt the current position, so the GPS aerial appears not to be acquiring satellite postioning correctly. So starting point is some 193 miles from actual location - but its always the same location when i turn SatNav on.

Can you point me to the download  guide for latest maps - its worth a try.

I think I must have a faulty aerial but would like to be sure.

But I'll try map update first.

Hi massimo, did you find a solution to your problem, I have the Amundsen satnav  fitted to my Octavia mk2, the satnav always starts from a small town in Germany of all places although I live Leicester Uk. No matter what adjustments I make it’s always starts with this town in Germany as it’s home address. Any advice please would be most appreciated. Naals

The default location for the VW Satnav is usually Wolfsburg Germany where the head quarters of VW are located.

I saw this several times after upsetting my Octavia MK3 Columbus maps but the correct location came back after the GPS locked onto a signal.

Thanks for your reply Gabbo you are right, replaced the GPS aerial, jobs a good one, works a treat.
