Thrust sensor?

Featured Replies

Just phoned my dealer about my turbo problems. When I told the service bloke that it was ok for a few days after they replaced the clutch pipe, he mentioned a thrust sensor (I checked he was not confused with MAF or n75).

Whats that then? Would be nice to be armed with a little info before I get fleeced for my hard earned cash!

Car is booked in at 8.30 tomorrow morning. Should also get my dashboard reset thing done....

Thrust sensot is the boost sensor. Measures boost and if it senses too much boost it will kill the turbo and throw into limp mode. Likewise when this sensor breaks, it will be in limp mode all the time. I had this when one of the wires to my "thrust" sensor snapped. :(

Something in my childish immature mind always giggles at the term thrust sensor. Sounds like something you need on a p0rn set. :D :naughty:

Arh... cool! So there do I find this thrusting sensor on the car? I wonder if I should have a look now (while the engine is cool and I don't burn myself!)

vag-com is not reporting any errors. I keep suspecting a broken wire somewhere which was temporarily made good when they fitted the new pipe....

Have a look at the item in the link then hun around for one.

Think i have seen one somewhere on the engine bay, but damned if i can remember where I'm affraid.

Trouble is that the turbo is around the back of the engine and a bit of a pig to get at (especially when trying to keep half clean as I am at work....)

Personally, I would let the dealers change it and ask them to check all the wiring at the same time.

From what Jason said, it sounds like this thing would cause the problems you have.

Mind if i ask which dealers you are using and if you had any luck with our favourite dealer friend?

I am using Loders Skoda in Yeovil, as I feel I have better results with then, than I did with Westover. Plus they have cute receptionist girl (http://www.loders.skoda.co.uk/ and then "meet the team")

I have not tried my mechanic bloke there this time around. It is harder to get to the mechanics now they have moved to a new site - before they were out the back!

Although I am wondering if the initial turbo replacement was all a wild goose chase now! Seems like identical behaviour.

True... the replacement turbo had done about 10k miles I think, and the rest of my car has done 91k now!

Thats the one! You can even get a cup of coffee while you wait - mind you I only got one and I was there for 2 hours :-(

Going off topic, but how much did you pay for a cambelt change?

  • Author

Haven't! It was done at 60ish k - before I bought it......

However there was a car mag a few months ago with an article in it for doing the can belt change on a TDi Octy. I was going to buy it, but forgot :-(

Boost sensor sits in the top of the intercooler.

The Haynes manual mentions it on page 4C-9. The sensor is circa £85.

 For my car it was only

I have seen them for $85 so should be in the £40 region over here I would think with the $ -> £ rate and also the fact that it's a european car in the US so parts are more expensive.

Ouch... well I was hoping it might have been something physically closer to the turbo - as that is where they were fiddling when they changed the clutch pipe, rather that on the intercooler.... but never mind.

They claim not to charge a diagnostic fee if they then do the work to fix it....!! but we shall see!

Off we go! Next message I should have something useful to report!

I've got the article on cam belt replacement. The "counting teeth to get the pump to camshaft distance/timing correct" bit looks like a fiddle, and has got me wondering just how many PDs have the fuel timing just a hair off cos the belt's not exactly right.
