Which panel filter?

Just two pieces of research I admit but they mirror my own findings. The airflow increase on a performance panel is so small as to be insignificant on most moderately powerful engines. I'm not prepared to compromise filtration for little or no power increase.

?

I have at the side of me a small testing machine that we play with that shows how much extra air flow you can get with the performance panel filters.

It is nothing to do with pressure drop , it is the easy straight forward air flow.

If anyone would like to have a play with it they can.

Why not try BMC panel filter (6 times world champion f1 and le-mans)

 the most sensible post on this subject yet :)

I too have seen similar dirt accumulations downstream of "big name" filter panels, and they have been oiled ones - an unoiled cotton or foam filter WILL let small dirt particles through. The "big names" will be quite clear on that too.

Sarah, how does your machine "measure" airflow differences? Presumably pressure drop across the filter? (If there is no pressure drop then there is no flow restriction.. )

Having modified a number of cars with air filters and induction kits' date=' both of the foam and the cotton variety, I have reached the following conclusions.

1) panel filters make sod all difference over a clean paper filter.

2) Induction kits can make a difference but generally muck about with torque curves (less go low down, bit more high up) Design and siting of the kits is critical. If you take in appreciable amounts of warm air you can say goodby to the gains and will still have the losses.

3) Filtration of foam and cotton filters is less than satisfactory. On a previous car I ran a big brand cotton gauze induction kit for 10,000 miles before removing it. The amount of dirt inside the induction pipe was shocking. This was suppossed to be one of the better performance filters for filtration too!

I'm not trying to sway peoples opinions, I'm just giving people more information on which to make an informed decision.:)[/quote']

Oh ours will be cheaper than that ;)

Like I say , keep an eye out

Sarah

How long should we keep an eye out for?,im liking the sound of this pipercross deal hehe

any news on this Sarah (ya tease! :P :D ) haha

I can only speak as I find.

Nothing technical or anything like that. BUT, having recently replaced my oem paper filter with a K&N panel filter, I have found an improvement in the throttle response, and it also seems more eager higher up the rev range. Don't get me wrong, the changes are are only slight, but they are there.

It is not the 'placebo effect' as I was sceptical about any gains made by replacing the filter in the first place.

I was pleasantly surprised:)

How long had the paper filter been in though?
