Insurance and breakdown cover for UK + EU ?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

this is a question to those who drive your Skoda in both UK and EU - when it comes to insurance (I) and Breakdown Cover (BC) how do you insurence your car ? One I + BC for UK and one BC for EU ? Or just one for everything ?

What is your approach to this ?

Thanks

Insurance should cover 90 days aboard, read your small print as to whether you need to inform them first.

Breakdown cover, there are policies that cover all of Europe.

I'm insured through Admiral and have a full Europe breakdown cover.

Prior to getting breakdown thrown in when we bought our Karoq last year we had cover with UK based Driver Guardian that provided full cover (at home, breakdown, relay etc) for UK and Europe for less than £100. When existing Skoda cover expires will likely go back to them

Hi

I recently broke down near Dijon on French motorway driving back from a ski-ing holiday.  We had breakdown cover with our Nationwide Flex Plus current account.  Costs £13 a month.  The breakdown cover is provided by the AA.

I have to say that I was fairly impressed with their service.  We got a pick up from the motorway to a local garage.  The AA assistance then spoke to the breakdown guy and sorted the recovery cost off the motorway.  They then arranged for a taxi to take us (4 people) to Dijon to pick up a hire car. As it was fairly late on a Saturday they arranged hotel accommodation near Reims.  The next day we drove to Lille and caught a Eurostar to London and then a train from Paddington to Bristol.  All of the transport was arranged by and paid for by AA Assistance.  We had to pay for food and fuel for the hire car.  They arranged for a garage to fix the car after me aggreeing to the repair costs.  They then paid for me to travel out to Dijon to pick up the car.  They arranged a flight from Bristol to Paris Orly, Taxis from the airport to the Gare de Lyon and TGV to Dijon, overnight stay in Dijon and a taxis to the garage the next day to pick up the car.  All of which they paid for.

We had to phone the AA European assistance several times to make and confirm each step of the journey home and for the return journey.  I could always get through fairly quickly and spoke to someone who could speak fairly good English.

I thouht it would all be a bit of a nightmare however the recovery, return to the UK and return to pick-up the car all went very well.

But do you have European breakdown cover as part of UK car insurance or is it purchased in addition to it ?

Breakdown cover is always an add-on IME.

Agree with @petrolcan  I’ve never found it as all-inclusive but an add-on option (such as legal cover)  when you take out your insurance

I recently had a good experience of the AA when an injector failed. AA cover also provided through a bank (a different one); perhaps we get a better service?

I would be interested to know what your failure was as we both have the same 1.6 TDi CR engine.

Hi, Just to confirm.  The European breakdown cover is included for £13 a month (and so is travel insurance and some mobile phone cover).

For details go to the Nationwide site.
