Timing belt info from Skoda.

I spoke to Skoda Leeds today about getting a price for my timing belt.  It is £1800 currently to do it.  Good news is that the mileage at which you change the timing belt has been raised to 140k miles.

 

Previously it was at 70k miles and then every 50k or 5 years.  This is what I've read on here and elsewhere.

 

So I was all set to get mine done locally, but thought I would check what the cost would be at the main dealer.  Told the price plus also told the new info.  Our car has done 120k, so we have two more years to go.

 

However, if I had mine done at 70k miles, does that mean I now don't need to do it for another 140k from the 70k mark ?

 

Anyone else heard about this recent change in timing belt alterations ?

I'm going to stick to 50k/5 years, whichever is sooner, for cam belt, and water pump.

 

Mind you, the new cam belts must have an 18ct gold internal core to make such a jump in life expectancy and a cost of £1800.

My last belt, pump, tensioner and rollers in 2021 was £649 inc vat at Skoda main dealer, with 7 separately identified Skoda part numbers.

@yeti99  The change is not recent on the schedule / recommendation it was a year ago.

What engine does your Yeti have?

 

As to prices quoted,  a TDI and Cambelt & Water Pump is one price, parts and labour.

A TSI might be less,

but a 1.4 TSI or 1.5 TSI ACT can be really silly prices, and some at dealerships just quote the really silly price they see on a screen.

I'd never let a belt go to 140k, even 100k is pushing it. 6/7 years and around 80k seems like a better option to me. They aren't going to supply and fit a new engine for you if it failed.

Try A&A motors in Hull - they update the Skoda service record for you and have courtesy cars.

Our was done in February for £560 including the water pump (2.0 diesel) .They have done work on all our Audis and Skodas since we moved here. They have an ex Skoda master tech.

 

Not sure where the £1800 - we were quoted £1000 by them and the one in York.

Wow, that's good.  What the hell are Skoda doing charging £1800 ?  Some fools must be paying it.

I don't get the £1800 as DM Keith Skoda quoted us £1000 in February? Even so I agree, £569 with a new water pump for us (or £499 for the other person) and that garage is making a profit !

 

 

Sounds like their Service Desk person was quoting for a 1.5 TSI ACT and Water pump, or just did not want the job in.

That's Exactly what I was thinking! (On both counts)

I took my MK1 Octavia up to 325000 miles with one cam belt change at 225000 when it started degrading, the belt cost me £8, I did not replace the tensioner, bearings or water pump, my rationale (then) being that the factory fitted ones were better quality than probably anything available on the aftermarket and as they had lasted to 225K miles they would likely carry on longer than replacements, 10 years later when I scrapped the vehicle the belt and ancillaries, pump etc were still perfect.

 

I did the same with my MK2 Octavia but sold it within a few years when the Yeti came up.

 

I will be more circumspect with the Yeti as it is a CR engine, for now I am continuing with 2 yearly belt inspections, at 9 years old and 137K miles its still perfect, when I see the first indications of degradation I will move to annual inspections.

 

I would probably still replace the belt alone but by then will have more knowledge of failures on other vehicles, I dont seem to hear of many even any, just that the dealers chasing the money are pressurising people to have the job done whilst VAG have increased the service interval.

 

£1800 though :sadsmile: that is more than half of what I paid for my vehicle when it was less than 4 years old.
