Scala - question before buying

Featured Replies

Hello guys. I'm really close to buying Scala. I really loved the test drive, it's a lovely car.

I do have few questions before making the final decision.

1.) I do plan on having car for a long time. Are spare parts expensive/cheap?

2.) I tested Scala with a manual transmission, but will be buying 1.5 gasoline 150hp DSG.

Is it smooth, does it work/shift well?

3.) I am thinking about buying the version with spoiler and extended glass on the rear hatch door.

However,  is it more likely to get damaged in case of somebody rear-eding my car? Or does it not make big difference with regular one?

4.) What is fuel consumption at speeds of 160-170kph? I travel a lot through Germany and i love Autobahn without speed limit. :)

Would you guys (and girls) say that the car is fuel efficient (if driven by speed limits outside of germany?)

5.) Would you consider this a good car for someone who drives at least 20-25 thousands kilometers per year?

Sure, every car maintence is gonna cost a lot after 200.000km, but do you guys think Scala can make it up to 300.000km, with proper care

and regular maintence?

6.) Is there anything you really love/hate about this car?

I like sports seats, but i'am a bit afraid as it seems they are not adjustable?

Well, seats are a very personal thing (oh er missis! ;) ); seriously, I had a mate who got back pain after one hour in a Citroen Xantia, where I could drive one all day without issues. We'd both been happy after 5 hours or so in a Citroen BX.

Well, thats what i'm afraid of.... :)

My height is 180 cm, which is average height so the seat should be fine for me. My wife however is 160 cm, and those sports seats look really high. Especially the head rest part compared to normal seats.

I wish i could test the car with those seats, i'm not sure if it's smart buying this edition before testing. Maybe i should go for standard seats.

Does any other Škoda model uses exactly the same seat (same dimensions), so maybe i could test drive that one it if the seats are exactly the same?

I believe the Kamiq Monte Carlo has the same sports seats as the Scala.

Hi

I have a 2020 Scala with sports seats, full glass back and 1.5DSG. I've had it since new and done 77,000kms

1.) I do plan on having car for a long time. Are spare parts expensive/cheap?

- I've not had to replace any parts here and still under 5 a year warranty, but suspect they are similar to any other VW parts

2.) I tested Scala with a manual transmission, but will be buying 1.5 gasoline 150hp DSG.

Is it smooth, does it work/shift well?

- Yes, no complaints really. Works great in sports mode.

3.) I am thinking about buying the version with spoiler and extended glass on the rear hatch door.

However,  is it more likely to get damaged in case of somebody rear-eding my car? Or does it not make big difference with regular one?

- Looks much better and no damage to date. No issues with it. The tinted glass helps cut out heat.

4.) What is fuel consumption at speeds of 160-170kph? I travel a lot through Germany and i love Autobahn without speed limit. :)

Would you guys (and girls) say that the car is fuel efficient (if driven by speed limits outside of germany?)

- Long term average since new is 5.7L/100km . On motorway/open road driving I can get as low as 4.5L/100kms. I have a mix of motorway, peak hour traffic, all sorts.

5.) Would you consider this a good car for someone who drives at least 20-25 thousands kilometers per year?

- We do about 22,000 per year (the car sat unused for some time over Covid lockdowns soon after we got it!) . No complaints at all. Power is good in such a light car - overtakes well and quick off the mark.

Sure, every car maintence is gonna cost a lot after 200.000km, but do you guys think Scala can make it up to 300.000km, with proper care

and regular maintence?

- So far 77,000km and no faults at all. The engine is fairly common across Volkswagon family, so best see the DSG and 1.5TSI are like in general across the ranges.

6.) Is there anything you really love/hate about this car?

- Good family car for 4 of us and small enough to park easily. Good size boot and legroom

7 Sports seats

- We have the sports seats. Im 180cm, my wife is 158, so same as you basically. Neither of us have any issue and I really like them.

Hope that helps.

Thanks a lot for this extensive reply.

Seems like it really is a good car.

As for seats, are they the same design as this?

What i am a bit worried is the "hole" in the upper part. It would be uncomfortable and dangerous in case of accident if somebody would be too short for this seat and their head would be in this "hole".

But if your seats are simmilar and the seat fits for you wife height, i guess it should be ok...

Yes, they are the same seats. We've not seen it as a problem at all, but if you want peace of mind then see if you can find a car with them and try it out.

We have a Scala Monte Carlo and find the sports seats very comfortable. Strangely enough my wife hated the sports seats in my Golf GTI, she absolutely loves these for the support and comfort they give. Obviously, try them out first at a dealer.

Hello guys, so i tested the car with sports seats. It was comfortable for both of us, but does this height looks safe to you? (in a case of accident)

Oh and another question.

Can you fit skis of length 175-180cm diagonaly if you fold back seats?

Speaking of safety, i know this isnt the best option, but we go skiing perhaps 2-3 times per winter.

With the seat in my driving position it is 180cm right to the edge of the boot diagonally. So its tight. Depends on the seat position.

If you had the front  passenger seat forward a bit it should be fine. But the larger side of the 60/40 split is the drivers side (Right).

I don't have a centre ski hole in the rear seats, it was an optional extra.

I don't really see an issue with the seat safety, but its your call with how you feel about it.

Thanks for reply. No, i think the seats are OK, but im not an expert about safety. All i know is that the seat headrest height is important, because in a case of accident

your head shoudl be secured. If the seat in the picture i posted is ok, then it's OK with me.

I was just a bit worried that the head would hit "the hole" in the seat.

Another question - can you permanently turn of speed limit warnings? I know lane assist has to be turned off manualy every time, but can you permanently disable the beeping when you drive over the limit?

On mine I have to turn off the speed limit warning manually every time, same with lane assist.

I don't have that feature in my Scala. That would be annoying if it did. Is it not an option in the infotainment menu? I know there are the steering wheel controls to turn it off each time but some of the infotainment menu options can change things permanently.

Yes I did it on my 2019 SEL DSG Scala with a Carista OBD scanner  sadly not stop start or lane assist control.

Compulsory 'safety features'  on a new car now in 2024 are different from even safety features on a new car from 2023.

Speed limiter etc.

So they might or might operate differently and 'turning off' or disabling them might be different, so you need to be in a car First Registered from July 2024 in the EU /UK before you will know.   & vars in other World Regions might be different again.

Yes, i checked and starting with July 1st its mandatory.

I just hope that turning it off/on will remain the same as it is.

Its pretty quick to turn off speed limit warning as it is. I just hope they wont change they way how you turn it off/on.

Yes, but it isn't where you think it is.

Go into Nav, then Settings, Route Guidance, Road Signs, then scroll the settings on Speed Warning. You can choose from display and sound, display only, or off.

Which of the 3 types of Speed Warnings have the 2024 cars got fitted?

Is it the simplest & is there a Data Logger?   I assume there is.

An informative or advisory ISA.  Showing a warning.

A supportive or warning ISA.    Increases upward pressure on the accelerator pedal making it harder to push if you exceed the speed limit.

An intervening ISA .  Reducing power if you are speeding.

  • 2 weeks later...

My 24 Scala with ACC, shows the Speed limit on the virtual cockpit and if you exceed it the speed sign flashes and gives you a pinging noise for  5 secs then goes quiet. You can still ignore the speed limit and set the ACC to whatever you like. One thing I do like about the ACC is when the speed limit is changing from say 40 to a 30 the car automatically brakes so that when you pass the sign you are doing 30mph. But one pain in the rear with that system is that when you are on a dual carriageway at 70, it comes up and says bend ahead when there is a curve in the road and tries to slow the car down to something like 55, even thought the bend is slight, so you have to override it. It still has a long way to go yet before it becomes fool proof!

Speed limiters have not been mandated in GB yet, only in Northern Ireland at the moment as they are classed as in the EU. But give the government a year or two, and it will be pushed through by the back door.

Along with as many stealth raiding taxes they can think up to fund and rebuild the ailing blob. Not forgetting every oxymoron Ed Miliband can  implement to save the planet from the motorist and anyone who wants hot water, heating and to be able to cook and eat a bacon sandwich.

So bought and first registered in Great Britain, England Scotland or Wales and no compulsory Speed Limiter and then lives and drives in Northern Ireland so the UK / Great Britain & Northern Ireland and not required, or actually mandatory.

Just the usual clutter ****.
