Clunk when turning steering wheel

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I have a weird issue.

When I move off first thing in the morning, and reverse off  my drive and turn the steering wheel there is a clunking sound. Then nothing when driving. It happens occasionally again when reversing out of a car park space, but no clunking noise when driving or going round bends etc or speed bumps.

Is it the ball joint(s)?

MOT in 2 weeks.....

Thank you all as always in advanced for your answers 👊🏻

Are you applying the brakes at the time of the clunk?

Hi Edbostan.

My Roomy is a automatic (non DSG).... sorry i forgot to mention that.

I am pressing the brake pedal to start her up and to release the handbrake and to move her into reverse/gear, then obviously coming off the brake, and she starts to move backwards... and as soon as I turn the steering wheel to turn there is a clunk noise (just once) amd when I turn it the other the way to straighten up - no noise.

Hope this helps.

Pulled straight out the air with limited info, I'd be looking at anti-roll bar links as the first place to start.

They can be clunky so and sos and are a relatively cheap and easy fix if it is them that have worn.

A broken spring can also cause this.

Only a small bit may break off making it hard to spot, but means the spring doesn't fully sit in correctly and can move about in certain manuvers

Hi EnterName.

Thanks for this.

I'll ask the garage to look at the Anti Roll bar links when they MOTing her.... surely these will be looked at anyway....

Hopefully they notice it when they pull her into bar 🤞🏻

Thanks again, and all the best 👊🏻
