  • I agree with mccririck. Factory fitted goodyears were the most noisy tires I ever got, despite having lower dB value than others. Basically tire noise and tire performance are always about combination

Try driving something like a Dacia sandero, flat 500, vauxhall viva. Suzuki's are pretty bad too. All very noisy on the road.

An odd comparison of City Cars that might be in the Fabia class compared to a City Taxi sized Mk4 Octavia.

Why the confused face reacting to  mine lol u have disabled dm's

I had a mk2 Renault Mégane, best car I've had tbh. Was the most comfortable and quietest car I've ever driven even with ling long tyres.

I had the megane 2015 diesel mk3 or 4 I think and that was built like a tank didn't move in strong winds  and was quiet.

I had the dacia sandero and that was quiet but had 15 inch tyres.

Now my kia is not quiet at all

Well the older Kias did suffer from a lot of nvh, very solid cars, but the later stuff is far better.

Do u have the mk4 octavia? Whats the road noise like to ur megane.

I have the 2021 kia ceed. My 2016 ceed was 50% quieter

No sorry mine is the last of the MK3, I would imagine the MK4 is quieter though. I have Dunlop sp sport blue response rear and continental efficient grip on front I think, tyres are old and in need of replacement but the noise is acceptable considering. 205/55/16.

I'd have thought the sel would one of the quietest models to have. Have you got parcel shelf installed as that can make a huge difference.

I replaced a VW 2017 GTD estate with the 2021 VRS Hybrid PHEV which is a lot quieter.

I had a Megane 2 for 15 years, indeed - the build quality was far better then compared to nowadays. I wouldn't say it was the quietest car I had, but it was a diesel - that might explain why. Had also an mk4 Megane for 2 years, also diesel - it was better soundproofed compared to the mk2, also slightly better materials inside here and there, but it was not as reliable as the mk2.

Now back on topic, the mk4 Octavia, even with it's bigger diesel engine was quieter than the above-mentioned Megane(s) - which for me it meant that Skoda took greater care in isolating the engine-bay noise. (there's also some technical and soundproofing material evolution to be taken into account, since the Megane 2 was lauched in 2001 IIRC, and the M4 in 2016). Most of the noise I had in the cabin of Octavia was coming from the lower side, especially from the front - that's why I mentioned in my previous post the tires were noisy. And to support this idea, the noise (intensity and frequency) was changing with the tarmac texture. On the other hand, I added the optional soundproofing side windows, so most of the aerodynamic noise at high speed was kept outside.

Our O4 controls road noise pretty well, but it depends on the road surface. Before, all our roads were really noisy and you couldn't help it, but nowadays it is much better.

It also depends on expectations, but comparing to similar pricing cars, it is quieter. Comparing to BMW 5 it is not.

Wind noise is nearly non existing, road noise on our 205/55R17 wheels highly depending on the road surface.

My dad's Suzuki Swift wasn't bad at all.

The cars you list are all much smaller than the Octavia.

Ford Focus much quieter than Octavia.

The road surface variations are what highlights how bad it is imo. Of course there won't be much noise on a new smooth surface. It's how it sounds on the rougher stuff that matters.

I'm thinking of removing the arch liners and fitting some dodomat to the underwing areas to see if it helps at all.

You have here all the info you might need:

I have "Continental EcoContact 6" and the noise seems fine on my mk4, it depends a lot on asphalt type anyway

Conti EcoContact are LRR tires (Low Rolling Resistance) - which means lower friction, and also less noise. I noticed they were quiet - had them factory fitted on my Formentor.
I had to remove them ASAP, since they were loosing grip on almost every sportier start (from 0 km/h) and sometimes while braking on wet - they made the car feel extremely insecure.

so I should think about changing them in winter probably, maybe switch twice a year

Low rolling resistance does not mean low noise. Please don't just make stuff up.

it does reduce the noise a bit i think

winter tyres r noisy because the traction more traction more noise

i think

we got alot of people in scotland here

if u can afford winter tyres and u drive in snow i Highley recommend getting winter tyres

in uk there is snow but gets cleaned very quick theres not much point

Winter tyres are softer rubber and also the blocks move more. They'll wear out fast in summer and handling won't be a precise due to block movement.
