Things to watch for on SDi?

Featured Replies

Hi

A friend is looking to buy a 2001 reg Fabia SDi Comfort with around 38,000 miles on the clock. Are there any particualr things he needs to be aware of on this model? Also, what sort of price range should he be looking at? This one is around

The shockingly bad performance at all speeds and in all gears? :P

Oh, I forgot to add that:thumbup:

I had a slight diesel leak solved by having the rubber bungs replaced.

Other faults seem common to all models eg power assistance sensor, air con sensor - lots of threads on both

My Y reg has now done 69k and going strong

Albeit very slowly...

:P ;)

sdi is fine if you are not into overtaking or pulling away fast at roundabouts and road junctions. I drove one once as a courtesy car and found I had to be very careful to make sure I had plenty of time to get up to speed when pulling out into busy roads.

When they do pick up mind you they fly!

Ditto the taxi - I got into one which had done a similar mileage and the bloke said he'd only ever had to do the cambelt / brakes /oil etc. Seem to be a very reliable engine if it's not been thrashed.

That price does seem steep.

Had my SDI from new, did 59000 miles in 3.5 yrs and in that time the engine was very reliable and used littel oil (2 litres topping up between servicing in all that time). I never turned the Aircon off all year and when new the car never returned less than 58mpg and by the time I sold it it was giving over 60mpg (this is true consumption from filling the tank and not from the onboard computer which was 2mpg optomistic. The engine was very flexible and forgiving if you pulled away in 2nd gear. It was not underpowered but did not have the acceleration of a turbo car. Not too much of a problem in Norfolk / Suffolk.

I now have a 1.4 TDI Fabia and although it does have wonderful mid range torque it is not as flexible to drive as the SDI and not nearly as economical (despite the official figures!!). One warning the SDI took 7 miles to warm up fully on a cold winters morning - other than that I'm sorry to have sold it - I now realise it was a mistake and Skoda don't do the SDI anymore.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Yes, I have warned him how slow it will be, but his need is for cheap to run as his commute just got much longer. He is not a fast driver anyway. I let him drive my vRS last year and he had to be "hinted to" about approaching a corner about 40mph too fast. He knows his limits and buys cars accordingly. Mind you he has not always and has owned a couple of quick things, both of which nearly got him killed.

Chris

64mpg

Group 3 insurance

comfy

AC and CD

slooooow (but you ain't gonna get nicked for speeding on the motorway)

no one is going to steal it

cheap to maintain

handles well

will cruise all day at 80 mph and do 60+ mpg

these are the reasons I have one.... 65000 miles on the clock for a 51 plate, bought second hand.

The SDI can probably go just as fast as a TDI, it just takes a lot longer to get there.

I know i have had SDI octys go bombing past me on the M/Way

handles well

I would personally disagree with that comment, but I guess it depends what you're comapring it to!

Chris

Handles well in everyday driving... and better than a 1979 Dolly Sprint!

But you can't drive across a ploughed field with a basket of eggs on the back seat, and expect them to remain intact...........

While wearing a outragous hat ;)

And you can't just change every part of the car including the chassis if you break abit, not to mention not having that f**king gear stick. What on earth was that all about hey;)

I've seen an SDI annoying Porsches on track! They're obviously quite quick enough.

Yeah it annoys me when things keep getting in my way on trackdays.

He wants an economical commute, not a trackday special:D

Funny that, I've seen it too but I think the S in SDI stood for "special" ;) As for bombing along the pmotorway, I'm sure plenty of people have seen SDIs travelling briskly along the M1 at times ;)

You see I'm guessing from the pics that I have just seen and the fact that it has colourcoded parts and alloys etc that the "SDI" you drive isn't really an SDI ;)

As well as not being an estate?

That took me many hours and a lot of money to get it to that spec, I think the xenons costs me the most. The alloys came from a TT, 8x17 :D

The underbonnet pics posted on here are the best part of it ;) A true work of art :D:rofl:

Chris

Oh yeah, they were good
