Looking for a very very cheap track day car

Or how about one of these... 720kg kerb weight, almost all mechanical parts interchangeable with saxo's & 106's... They hang on brilliantly and are simply amazing around corners with right setup!

That's besides the point... But seriously, it'd make a great track day car. Just try avoiding hump back bridges :)

That would be a brilliant choice, I had one as a first car and it was fantastic. I couldnt find any in good enough condition for the money when i was looking.

ad dturbo where did you put the second gearknob you bought for the Jetta

One was bought on ebay and missing a screw, couldnt be bothered to fixed it when a silver golf ball style one came about! :)

A neighbour of mine, has got a suzuki swift 1.3 gti. 100 hp, and weigh about 750kg. Strip it out, you could get it around 650 kg or less. Find one which has been previously modified, maybe a manifold, filter and exhaust. You'd have a very quick car..

You wouldn't neccessarily need a GT model, you could get a much newer car, 1.1i say, and drop an engine in from a vts/106 GTI, handling could be sorted out by bolting on saxo/106 running gear etc. that may be achieved for less than

drove the fezzie last night. sounded sweet as a nut, gearbox seemed very notchy however and the clutch felt like it was slipping.

Ah, nostalgia. My first experience of brisk motoring was as a passenger in my Dad's mates AX GT(i?) in about 1990.

I remember that it had really good seats that held you when tanking it around corners.

We travelled at about 80mph around, and through the middle of, a certain east coast tourist resort. I was just sat there -50% scared and 50% loving it ;)

How about a Mazda MX-5 stripped-out and stiffened up?

An old Corsa/Nova with a 1.8/2.0 engine?

What about an old 24v Senator with 5 speed manual and diff from a 2.5L? Strip it out and go nuts. "Entertaining" RWD handling, sound good and go well.

Chris

The AX did grip well, but you can make it let go. It warns you before it lets off so to roll it like that you would have to ignore the signs or be unlucky and hit something on the road.

Saying that the AX is plastic and a mobile coffin.

You get more crash protection in a fag packet:D

Chris

Is the AX by a wall the same AX that is upside down by they way?

I used to drive a BX and that was scarey enough. Now remove any sort of distance between yourself and the impact and you end up with an AX. They are really not good to crash and I'm seen the remains of some. They usually have a lot of blood in which isn't a good sign :(

Yes it is, hence my  at the post by the owner saying they really held the road :D

They go very well as they weigh half of s0d all. They also hold the road well, but only when the wheels are in contact with it.

Ah, much like certain Fabias ;)

Chris from your first post the Rover 220, forget it! I'm there at the moment and I dont trust it to get me to the shops and back let alone on the track..........over heats like a bu**ery! Sure when it goes it's quick and handles ok(ish).

Stick with something very common and cheap like fords/pugs as parts are pi** easy to get hold off.

I was involved in a very serious accident as a passenger in an M reg AX and at 90+mph into a stationary Sierra we both walked away (with moderate injuries - hobbled away perhaps more accurate) - anyone in the Sierra would have been dead as there was no passenger cell left.

They are tougher than you think - I owe my life to one and honestly believe if it had been a Fiesta etc I'd be dead now. The Saxo also had fantastic accident protection. Euro NCAP doesn't tell even half of the story.
