Injectors

Featured Replies

I have a 2018 octavia 1.6tdi. It's serviced every 10k with genuine parts and has been since I've owned it. Car has just turned 145k miles.

Few weeks ago I had a ticking noise...an injector knock. Diagnostic didn't pick it up. Ended up putting 4 new injectors in it. Absolutely ideal  have done 2k miles since and got the ticking noise again, this time accompanied by a misfire and diagnostic read "cylinder 2 combustion chamber"

Also 3 injectors at start up showers 0 degree of heat at start up and cylinder 2 had 19 degrees.

Injector 2 changed today. Car ran great for 60-80 miles and it's back to ticking again but no mis fire - this time no fault codes.

Part of me wonders could it be dirt in the fuel as both times this has happened around 60 miles after filling up....

Help!

Thanks

The entire fuel system needs to be flushed and cleaned if changing injectors on these engines. Even the slightest amount of dirt/dust etc can ruin new parts. Just touching the injectors can cause them to become blocked. You may be able to remove them and get professionally cleaned and get away with it.

Would that be a fuel cleaner / injector cleaner through it?

Ideally you want to remove the tank and hoses and flush them but it's not realistic and also very time consuming, not to mention expensive. You will never remove everything without replacing all parts you just have to do the best you can.

I'm at my wits end with this already. Its cost an absolute fortune already 😒

That's why I went for a petrol instead.

I'm currently considering getting rid. What else could it be? Realistically?

The high pressure pump itself could be breaking up allowing particles to enter the fuel system/injectors.

Would that be visible?  I'd have thought it would give a fault code aswell if it's causing an issue

You can look for metal particles in the fuel, take fuel filter out etc, won't really log a code untill the pump starts struggling to provide enough pressure but even before then you would probably notice running issues.

If it is that, Are the injectors likely to be gubbed?

Yeah since the particles from the pump go directly to the injectors, as I said you could try get them professionally cleaned and get away with it if they are recent.

Okay. I'll have a look. I can see me sending the car back to finance at this rate. I'm not throwing another stupid amount at it for another 4 injectors.

Update....  there is now a foul smell coming from the car. I can't tell if its smokey etc. It is very jumpy when trying to accelerate in like 1st and 2nd gear.

Maybe injector copper washer has failed? Did you fit them yourself? You need to get the mating surfaces spotless and use new washers and bolts. Sometimes I've seen new washers fail.

The injectors were brand new out of the packet. My brother in law (has his own garage) did the job for me so I can only presume everything done correctly

Update.

4 injectors pulled and sent away to a diesel engineering specialist who have called this afternoon to say all 4 are clogged with dirty fuel. So they will professionally clean them and ill have the tank drained and lines cleared out etc

Hopefully cures the issue

Nice, they are very delicate hopefully be able to clean them? Make sure your brother is also extra careful and makes sure everything is clean when fitting.

Yeah I Will do. Need to drain the tank...there's about half a tank of fuel.... then put new clean diesel in with a system cleaner and prime through the fuel lines and pump. Gonna use a different petrol station and also put either BP ultimate or v power and fingers crossed resolves it

Have you got any scan tool? Usually you can activate fuel prime to get the fuel through. Or you could bridge the fuel relay.

He's got a snap on diagnostic machine. Iv only got a wee cheap code reader but I really should invest in one lol. Cars done 145k, after what iv just spent,  injectors, timing belt, water pump, crank seal, front brakes and an oil change I'm hoping to double that mileage... car should be more than capable

Im sure once you get it sorted the car will have a new lease of life and years of happy motoring 😁

Fingers crossed 🤞

Usually once a car gets to a certain age and miles most of the big stuff has been done, timing belt, clutch and flywheel, brake pipes etc. then you can pretty much run them forever with normal maintenance. Might get the odd sticky brake caliper here and there. Since the vag group don't really suffer from corrosion like other makes which kills them off.

Aye Iv always treated it as if it needs it gets it, i dont scrimp on servicing etc. I use mostly genuine parts...occasionally Mann when servicing. Car is used as a Private Hire buy has been excellent to date. Just this is the biggest issue I've had to be fair and if its just dirty fuel that's not even a major issue.
