Lumpy tick over

Featured Replies

Hi,

My Superb TSI is due to go into the garage on Monday because of a very lumpy tick over which sometimes cuts out. It throws up a P0011 code occasionally. The garage think it’s a stretched timing chain but my concern before handing over circa £1000 is that it is intermittent. Sometimes it purred like a kitten. Surely if it is a timing chain issue it would constantly be rough on idle.
Any thoughts most welcome please!

I'm not really a mechanical guy but I'd also imagine a stretched timing chain would constantly affect the engine not just sometimes...

What else have they checked?

What is P0011 ?

That’s what I thought also. I think it is related to the VVT. They have quoted over £3000 to replace the chain

It's either the cam magnet or the oil control valve - very simple fixes tbh.  and the parts aren't too expensive.  Does it sound like a diesel rather than a sewing machine yet?

Cheers, it intermittently sounds like an old diesel. That’s the part that is baffling me. If it was the chain it should be constant and wouldn’t purr once I slip it into Sport and raise the revs.

yeah most likely the cam magnets or the oil spool valve if it sounds like a diesel
