1.4 diesel cooling issue.

Featured Replies

New member here so big hello to everybody. I’ve got a 2016 mk3 diesel 1.4 with a cooling problem. On some days I can get to the end of the street and the temperature needle is at half way (normal) temperature position and other journeys it goes all the way round to one segment before going into the red. The car has not overheated yet. On the shortest of runs the fans are kicking in.
two questions is, 1: what’s failing, ie the water pump or thermostat. And 2: was there a recall for this model.
I’v looked on dvla site and cannot see any.
The car has only covered 22,000 miles.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Has it got any coolant in? Heat coming from the blowers? I doubt it's the thermostat or the pump as it wouldn't warm up that fast even if they were stuck. Sounds like a sensor problem kicking the fans in thinking the car is getting too hot.

Yeah there’s coolant in but it looks very clean for an eight year old car. !

Expansion tank is barely warm on a long run. Which sensor would that be. ?

thanks for the reply.

A long run? How long is that? Have you got anything measure coolant temperature? I imagine it has oil temp displaying the instruments? I'm not too familiar with that engine tbh. Could have housing on side of engine with sensor for guage and ECU. Usually 4 or 2 wires.

Long run around 50/60 mile. Not done a temperature test but I can put my finger in the expansion tank and feels luke warm.
no oil temp dials on dash.

That's definitely not right. Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open. Is fuel economy also down?

@Ordish

Welcome.

It was not a DVLA Safety Recall on vehicles as in the Pinned Thread.  It was a Recall Action, a Service Campaign, what i call a Skoda Secret Service Campaign.

Need to know and the last person to know is car owners, ones who are not getting dealer services might never hear.

Even the VIN checker as it was did not show the Service Campaign action due.

The joke was VW / Skoda saying it was the wrong coolant.  That was the wrong coolant as they factory filled.

Are you sure you can't display this on the MAXI DOT display (between the two large dials, speedo and rev counter)?  Have a look in your Owner's Manual of how to do this if it's available.

22k-miles in say 7 years can bring it's own issues - low mileage, short journeys, infrequent use  of a 2016 diesel car generally isn't a good thing for the engine (or possibly other bits of the car).  The car and engine really needs more than the minimum annual servicing and maintenance that Dealerships do but some owners don't even carry this absolute minimum on out of warranty period.

What is the service history of the car?

Have you had the car scanned with an appropriate VW programmed scan tool with a fully up to date program for your model and year and got a report?
