Wiper speed / Oil topup lid

Featured Replies

Hi

Never being one to ask normal questions can anyone with a Fabia MK4 tell me if either of these 2  things are normal

1. Wiper speed just seems a bit slow to me - this is doing a single wipe , ie push down on the stalk once, I am aware the windscreen is dry, but it doesn't really affect speed. Rear wiper seems a fair bit quicker, standard is same speed and fastest wipe speed is a bit quicker.

2. Couple of mm up a, down, left or right  movement of oil topup cover, it is clicked into place and doesn't rock , it stays totally flat as just moves 1-2mm if you push

I did say they would not be normal questions, I do seem to notice unusual things apparently, so I am told

1. In my experience dry windscreen does indeed make the wipers move slower. What you have shown is comparable to how it is on my car, when the windscreen is dry. I do agree that the wiper blades generally move slower than on cars from some other brands.

2. Wouldn't worry about it.

👍 Thanks, appreciate it

I give my wiper blades a frequent wipe with wiper wash on a cloth and keep the wiper parking area clean.

It helps the initial take off when the wipers are turned on until you can give a squirt from the washer bottle.

The lengths of my 2024 Skoda Fabia Mk4's wiper blades are 650mm (driver side) and 450mm (passenger side), whereas the lengths of my 2009 Skoda Roomster's wiper blades are 530mm on both the driver and passenger side - so comparing the relative speed of a 'single-action' wipe (ie push down on the stalk once) for the two cars would be a mite inconclusive irrespective of the screen being dry or wet.

To side-step this I fully lifted the blades on both cars so there was no 'wiper drag' on the windscreen and the the Roomster's single-action wipe was definitely SLIGHTLY faster than the Fabia's. In both cases the experiment was with each car's ignition on, but without the motor running.

I did not think my Fabia's wiper speed was particularly slow and was certainly fast enough for 'single wiping'.

When closed, there is no 'play' in my Fabia's oil filler-cap when closed and there is an obvious 'snap' noise when the cap is turned clockwise and becomes fully closed. But my Fabia has the 1.0litre motor, not the 1.5litre, so not really a valid comparison. If the 1.5litre motor's filler-cap should also 'snap' when properly closed, and your car's cap does this, it's reasonable to assume there's nothing wrong with it. (And if it does not 'snap, that could well mean that it is not designed to do this and, in which case, there probably is still nothing wrong with it...)

@gumdrop over and above the Service Position do the wiper have 2 park positions that they go to alternatively? Slight different amounts up the screen.

I would not know I have not used the park as I never remember it exists, I just have long enough arms to reach each in turn.

The same goes for the alternate park positions, my boys tell me I am a technophobe!😄

Yep, I always keep my wiper blades and parking area clean. Also never use wipers without a wee skoosh first. Keeps the screen scratch free. But due to sods law, some free flying stone will smack into your windsreen, as just happened to my wife's brand new motor with only a few miles on the clock!!!! Pain in the arse new motors, just love my 12 year old Corsa. Haha.

@gumdrop  There is nothing to do like putting the wipers in the Service position.

I am just asking if the wiper park / rest in a slightly different position by a couple of mm each alternate time they are switched off.

As some cars do so that the blades last longer supposedly.

Sorry I misunderstood. My wipers always rest in the same position as far as I can recall.

If it rains tomorrow I will investigate.

Thanks for the info 👍

So I got someone to check multiple other 1.5 engines, Fabia and Scala, 3 of them that were checked at least did the same thing, so I guess we will call that one normal.

For the windscreen wipers I cleaned the wipers and also the windscreen, I think they may have got some wax from on it when detailing. It’s a little faster, maybe feels a bit slow still but I have 2.5 years of warranty still and life is too short so it’s good enough.

Car is going in again soon for dash rattles and water in the rear high level brake light. It already went in once for rattles and it’s a bit better, they are now saying since they have already taken dash trim off several times, they likely need to replace, as clips get loose. Just teething issues, loving the car in general.

seems to be something about the Fabia for me, had 3 of the mk1 vrs , they were fantastic, would totally get another vrs if they did it 😊

Same, car is going in for warranty work, supposedly there is some slack in the left front wheel area and water in the rear high level brake light.Seems to be a design issue.

Car is only 1 year old

Slack in the wheel area ? that doesn’t sound good, what symptoms are you getting ?

None at all, everything seems to be fine while driving.I guess it's some kind of joint issue somewhere, they didn't specify.I wouldn't have known that there was an issue but i went for an oil change and check up and dealer notified me about the problem thus was covered under warranty.

You might want to update your forum Profile to provide details of your 2023 Fabia.

Thanks for reminding, dealer told me that they changed one of the tie rods under warranty. To be fair, steering feels more firm but that might just be placebo effect.Funny thing is they were supposed to change the high brake light also but it arrived broken from the factory so they decided not to install it.

While integrating the washer nozzle for the rear window-glass into the high-level brake-light's plastic moulding is undoubtedly a 'tidy' approach, it's perhaps not the greatest idea where longevity is concerned. My previous 2021 Hyundai i20 had this type of brake-light and there were several online complaints from owners of newish  i20 cars about the moulding cracking in the nozzle area, with the predictable consequence that washer-fluid then leaked into the lighting part of the brake-light.
