Waiting time for ECU from vag (TPS)

Hi anyone else waiting on a new programmed ECU for their superb diesel 6 weeks and counting.

@Johnboyab  What is the back story, not just on the 'Back Order', why do you need a New ECU.

 

I doubt they are a common thing that people are having to order via TPS.

Water damage engine had been steam cleaned or jet washed in the past. ECU sent off for repair by a specialist repairer but was beyond repair, it was full of water and was badly corroded inside,so new ECU ordered from TPS.

Why not fit a second hand ECU and have it recoded?

Tried that didn't go well Skoda won't touch it gave up and ordered a new one but it's taking ages to arrive

Take it to someone else with ODIS - most VAG specialists will have ODIS-S and can do this work for you.

Probably would have you agree to a no warranty disclaimer, but better than waiting around.

The second hand ECU the specialist fitted had umpteen fault codes which would come back after coding they came to the conclusion that ECU was faulty also, so bit the bullet and ordered new from vag/TPS.

E bay part so it was cheap for a reason.

@Johnboyab Where in Scotland are you, or the car?

ECU is tucked up under the windscreen behind the plenum bulkhead, the only way you could spray it would be deliberately after removing the panel.

 

They are nearly all IP68 rated meaning they will survive a 30 minute submersion at 1.5m depth and that includes the connector pins.

 

I have had several apart and never seen any moisture ingress although one had degradation of the nickel plating on the inside of the lid caused I believe from chemicals evaporating from the components.

 

I pulled one out of the charred remains of a Ford Galaxy, it was blackened and looked like it had been deep fat fried then thrown into a bonfire, the connector was a molten blob with a bundle of fused together copper strands coming out where the wiring loom had been cut to remove it. I carefully cut into the blob of plastic and managed to jack out the melted outer connector leaving the inner one intact, I never for one minute thought that it could function but gave it a try, the engine started immediately, I had the software flashed to the latest version and drove that vehicle for 4 years after doing the repairs before selling it on.

 

@Johnboyab Did you see the internal corrosion with your own eyes?

No sent to a specialist in England's hire who returned.

 

Take it apart to make sure you are not being given the run around.

 

It will be clear to see if the cover has already been removed.

Yeah it's definitely been opened up there was no charge from the ECU repair company just postage
