Engine grinding on cold start up

Featured Replies

Hi

i have recently purchased my first ŠKODA however I am not sure if the dealer is trying to fob me off regarding the engine noise on cold start up. They say it is the catalytic converter and nothing to worry about. Is it usual for ŠKODA to make this noise

I have never had an engine make this noise before. The car is in otherwise good condition, the service history isn’t perfect but not bad: it did go 4 years with no service but only covered 12,000 miles in that time

I am not sure if I should return the vehicle. Any advice appreciated

thank you

Welcome.

What engine is it. I know a TSI.

Sounds like a bag of nails.

What is the service history that is not bad.

Were there oil and filter changes in the 4 years?

What warranty have you got, just 3 months.     Maybe better experienced and informed members will be along. That does not sound right though.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. It’s a 1.5 tsi

i have attached the service history

it has a 12 month warranty it was purchased from an approved used ŠKODA dealership

I didn’t hear it when I test drove it. They have said it’s the the oil circulating and now it’s the catalytic converter and perfectly normal

i don’t know if I am being paranoid but I haven’t heard an engine make this noise before

I take it then that other 1.5 TSI ACT,s at that dealership will sound the same when started as they all have a Catalytic Converter.

They make up this stuff as they go along.

?

Was that the Master Tech or a tech that told you that?

The Spark plugs should be changed even though not at 40,000 miles.

Is there a nice clean Air Filter fitted?

This shows Fixed Service intervals.

Cam belt is not as shown here now, and 6 years for the Air Filter is ridiculous if not checked annually.

Would be helpful if you could upload a video with the noise.
