Noise in rear wheels when turning -haldex-

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

Since I bought the car, when I make 90° turns on the street I have noticed that the rear wheels are pulling, as if they are getting stuck, it only happens in tight turns in 1st gear. It has 110k kms (68k mi) and oil changes every 35k kms (21k mi). At 70k kms (42k mi) I cleaned the pump and I have had the last change for 15k kms (9,300 mi). I don't know if it's because the asphalt is very dry and the wheels grip more (primacy 4 at 70%) or if it's a worse and more serious breakdown.

I don't know if it would be advisable to reset the pump with OBD11 but I don't know how to do it or if I should do a new oil change with pump cleaning.

Thank you very much in advance.

I've got the same situation currently.  Had the Haldex pump cleaned and fluid done as routine maintenance last year, after about 8000 miles and 12 months there was a noticeable grumble on slow speed cornering. Skoda dealer investigated under warranty and did the same again, but didn't actually shed any light on what was going on (because I suspect they don't know).

It's returned within a couple of months, Skoda's answer is to throw my money at the problem scattergun-style and push me towards their extended warranty - no thanks. There's no stored error codes, and it's not a pump failure as the Haldex engages when it needs to to maintain traction. I'd say it's the opposite and it's engaging too often, I had it briefly burp when reversing today...maybe the ECU? Car is booked in at respected specialist to investigate next week, so we'll see what the outcome is.

Normal behaviour, its the Haldex pre-emptively engaging and creating transmission wind up in the time it takes to realise that you are pulling away slowly with the steering on lock and not dumping the clutch doing a drag start.

I notice mine when reversing out of parking spots in supermarkets, its just a momentary snatch but having owned and driven proper 4x4s for years I recognised it instantly.

What I had was definitely not normal; Skoda would have lost sales hand over fist if it were, given the racket it made.

The mystery has been solved - the pump had failed but in an unexpected way. Rather than the usual loss of drive to the rear, it seems the pump was not respecting the commands from the ECU and going freestyle. 5 days in on the new pump and all seems to be quiet again.🤞

Really? How many kms/miles it had?

Unexpected failure indeed ....

55k miles. PO had Haldex service carried out at main dealer at about 30k (so possibly not clearing the strainer). I had it done by a specialist when I took ownership at 45k (for which they did pull the pump to do the strainer), Skoda did the same during a warranty investigation at 53k, and then new fluid again when the pump was replaced by the specialist last week so it's definitely well flushed.

I probably could have pursued Skoda for the pump replacement but it wasn't worth the hassle, the specialist's bill was less than half what Skoda would have charged to do the job.

I consider this a worrying heads' up, I had dealer change fluid and "serviced" the Haldex but most likely they did not took the pump out and clean the strainer ... will do this incognito when time allows, I think to remember also the gasket and bolts are needed, which seem readily available.
