I bought some carpet mats on ebay and the rear mats were 5" short.

No, you were just sent mats for a different car. Probably a Golf or possibly an Octy. Most likely a Golf. All based on the same MQB platform so the mats are the same, just different lengths in the back.

No, "L" is not like a BMW 750iL compared to a T50i for instance.

It's just a question of trim level.
