VCDS Scan - What's The Diagnosis

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have today scanned a forum members Skoda Octavia Scout as per this thread:-

https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/526972-scout-20tdi-non-start-and-no-lights-on-cluster/

The car won't start. There are no ignition lights. Battery is charged.

Could someone better than me interpret the scan and identify the fault that needs rectifying.

Thanks,

Looks like the entire drive can-bus is down...

Unlikely to be that many fuses. You could disconnect all the modules on the drive can-bus to see if it's a module..

Otherwise, it could be the can-gateway or possibly the wiring to it from the drive can-bus.

At least that's my first guess 🤔

Cheers for the scan @tetley appreciate it.

Any recommendations very welcome i need to get the car mobile ASAP

Could be one dead module on the Powertrain CAN dragging it down? Maybe worth unplugging one module on that at a time to see if it unfreezes the Powertrain CAN to localise the fault.

Look at the scan for modules that cannot be reached, and unplug the connector on them one at a time doing a new scan after each one.

The main culprits being Engine, ABS, AWD and Steering Assist.

Without sounding too thick shall I unplug the fuses ?

Without sounding too thick shall I unplug the fuses ?

That's not going to disconnect the module from the CAN bus and it might remove power from other components too so I wouldn't recommend it.

I've opened up fuse box under bonnet it's green and milky allover going to clean it best i can and try again

Look at the scan for modules that cannot be reached, and unplug the connector on them one at a time doing a new scan after each one.

The main culprits being Engine, ABS, AWD and Steering Assist.

Where are the modules

Sounds like you should grab some wiring diagrams etc from erwin as you probably need to check for power, ground and CAN at each of the modules on the drive CAN-bus.

Very loose positions of the modules:

Has this ever been flooded? The corrosion is strong in this one.

Not that I know of

Right had the clocks checked they're OK. Autoelectrician came out this morning tested every fuse and relay all OK he bridged 2 fuses with a length of wire and got power to clocks and started the car it wouldn't turn off with key had to pull fuse. He said uts ignition switch so I've been and got one and fitted it but still the same 🤯 getting fed up of it now. Any ideas before I chop it up

That is a lot of 'can't be reached' faults.  It does sound like the CAN communication is down as @langers2k says.  Sometimes a single controller can broadcast rubbish on the network which can upset other controllers.  Using VCDS you can usually look at the status of the CAN system and you may see something there.  It will be under the live data and probably in the 'Cent Elec' controller.  I think on your car you will need to click 'Advanced Measuring Blocks' and then look for 'CAN Status' in the pull down list.  If that doesn't work because so much is down you may have to unplug one controller at a time as suggested to see if communication resumes.  I notice the CAN gateway itself is working (and probably wondering why nobody will talk to it!)  I have seen failing ABS controllers send the entire dash into a frenzy of wagging needles and winking lights.

I've just noticed that the Cent Elec controller (address 09) is missing from your scan.  VCDS doesn't seem to be even attempting to find it.  I think I would investigate that first.  Not sure where it is on an Octavia (sometimes behind the dash and sometimes under the driver's seat)  around your year they started physically combining them (in the same box) with the Conv Controller but VCDS and other diagnostics still counts them as separate things so it should appear on your scan like on my daughter's Fabia here:

Edit - Apologies ignore this the 09 is on your list.  Should have gone to spec savers!

I've no idea about VCDS but generally you always want the latest version updated/up to date versions of any programs (for your model and year of VW) to reduce risks of any program errors omissions on diagnostic tool.  If you've not already tried, I've seen Ross-Tech do info and have a users forum which may give help.

I forget which vids but similar sort of issue(s) diagnostic path(s) with checking and cross-checking of scan tool info are on this blokes YT channel (personally I wouldn't trust some auto-electricians and mains electricians as far as I could throw them, just what I've seen and personal experience employing and working with some mains electricians),

I've run out of "spare money" at the min so it's on hold for a week or 2 I've got it running with a wire giving live which turns the clocks on for me to start it not ideal but all I can do for now. The boot wont open from fob or boot switch. Rear 2 doors wont lock/unlock and screenwash has decided to stop working 🙈

Have look at those vids doing diagnostic checks can involve simple things like your humans senses (and 'common sense' often forgotten by paid professionals) perhaps borrow a multimeter if you don't have wire and light perhaps.  Lots of basic checks (also often forgotten or ignored by paid professionals) can often be carried out with just the car's 12v battery in reasonable state of charge and health.

But I can understand you being ****ed-off with the car and wanting a break from the problems it's giving you (been there more times than you can imagine) - if you don't really need to use the car then take a break from it, keep the battery charged and things shouldn't get worse (unless it's a water leaking in issue or affected more by colder weather).

Unless you've got some ort of vehicle recovery official or informal I'd be careful about using the car with dodgy electrics/electronics/computers in case you get a total no-go situation, unless you have experience of unreliable cars and the 'joys' of roadside "repairs" or recovery, Sod's Law they never happen in the dry and daylight or with the car sitting in a pub car park (although I have had the last one but didn't feel like drinking at the time even though I could have as I had a wait and certainly wasn't going to drive the car home though I had the experience to be able to).

Good luck, let us know how you get on. I've a mobile phone repair kit you can borrow, 2lb lump hammer and thick 4" nail.

I've a man said its the ccm or another module i can't remember reckons if its that it's a 120 bill. had 3 people out one came out for a full check of the car and never plugged it in so a polite phone call got him back the next day to plug it in and not have a clue what he was looking at 🙈 . I like the car a lot just a shame the hassle it's giving at the min whilst I'm off work waiting for surgery 😭

Cars are of no real cause for any real concern or worry, just lumps of metal - and now lots of plastics and marvellous(?) computers and computer programming and modules and sensors and thin wires, wot could possibly go wrong.

You've no need to add to the the profits and work of the dubious British motor trade or the economy of this country and others as I've done lots, more than enough of that already to cover you not contributing too much (I had the t-shirt too but it fell apart).

Just concern yourself with your physical and mental health and that of others you care about, there's always lots of opportunities for unsatisfying, and always ultimately fruitless farting about with cars and those opportunities will multiply in the future so you needn't miss out and can take a break anytime for any length of time (forever would be very good idea).  Things that seem very important at some points in life later may become difficult to remember let alone recognise as being of any real importance, to the vast majority that would be cars, 19th century technology with some 20th century technology, often clumsily, added.

Look up 1980s Škoda jokes, some were very good and inventive, only way to be about any car no matter which.  Now where's me hoop 'n; stick from me big Lottery win  .  .  .

I think it's worth having a close look with a torch along any of loom you can get at for any chafing.  You might have to get it up on stands.  Check especially around gearbox and steering rack.  Have a (long!) read of this thread from the VCDS forum.  It's about a Sharan but both the scan and the symptoms are very similar to yours.  I must admit I wouldn't power it up too many times until the fault is found just in case you cause a direct short to earth on one of the larger cables which might create a fire risk.   A day or two off and a fresh look and I'm sure you will find it

Good luck with it. 🙂

Below is a VW forum picture posted by a VW Master Tech.  It shows the sort of thing pronged chafing can cause.  This one was simply a non-start but when these larger high current wires break or short across to another they usually cause the major problems you have.   This one looks like it has been shorting and overheating.
