Random fault codes

Featured Replies

Hi,

I previously owned a couple of Superbs and the a pair of Kodiaq’s but moved away from the brand when I needed something bigger and now have a VW Transporter.  During this time my parents have gone from a Fabia to a Karoq and 4 years ago they bought a Kamiq.

The car is approaching 4 years old and is throwing random warning lights and error codes.  We had Skoda assistance out (extended warranty and service plan) and they could find nothing obvious, they cleared all the fault codes and on a test drive nothing happened.  I bought a Carsifi for my use but also to be able to see the codes on Mum’s car. Since they have been out we get random fault codes appearing, none of which seem to relate to a single module or unit in the car.  Sometimes the car goes a couple of journeys, mostly short runs, with nothing happening and other times errors appear all the time.

Has anyone had anything similar? I have booked it in for service and MoT in November but for the dealer to run a diagnostics check the earliest they could see it was December! So if there is something obvious that we could do to resolve in the meantime that would be great.

I was wondering whether a slightly tired battery might cause these problems?

Many thanks

Nigel

Re the battery maybe at fault, I bought one of the testers below, it's been invaluable for the three cars I've used it on recently.

Also I had a SEAT that started throwing up random fault codes, the battery was 4 to 5 years old so I didn't think it could be that, car started fine and all that. I was wrong, my local garage tested the battery and the diagnostics picked up the same  faults that I picked up from my simple OBD2 reader. He then said battery test, after the test it showed it was weak, yes it would charge but not hold a full charge.

Anyways new battery solved that problem, no more codes thrown up. I then bought the linked gizmo to test myself the various batteries I had. It worked on a Mazda battery, showing it was weak and needed replacing, that was 9 years old but still doing a decent job of starting the car, I replaced it anyway.

My Kamiq has thrown up codes, mainly the SOS one, battery tested and all good. That SOS message seems to be a thing with some VAG cars I've read, software update maybe which I've not got around to having checked.

Thanks for the reply.  I had the SOS issues on my Kodiaq and an updated module sorted it.  Might just stick a new battery on that and see if it solves the problem.

I do believe that they need to be coded in when changing batteries, check first.

All I've done in the past when swapping batteries on cars, minimum required (with those) was the relearning of fueling and reset the traction control, that was more to do with losing power (battery disconnected) than anything else showing faults.

Hi,

My Skoda Kamiq 2021 (Tech model) has been showing a message "Impaired sensor". This fault disabled the cruise control and lane assist functions but intermittently. Also sent a message, in red, "BRAKE" and no reason for the message.

The service centre checked out the sensor and thought they found a minuscule amount of bird poop - cleaned it? and cleared the fault codes. They also could not find the problem on a test drive. A return visit said the mirror housing had shifted very slightly and this could have caused the problem.

Sure enough the fault returned, randomly occurring on short and long drives when the cruise control is in position. After a second check, the service centre said they would order a replacement (under warranty). A shortage of service mechanics led to a new service centre taking on the problem with a new team of mechanics and they will start again.

Since then, a new problem arose. The car gave a message "No key detected". There was no warning that the key fob battery was low? We had the fob battery changed about 2 years ago, after a message on screen. This time, it went into alarm mode and locked me in the car! Eventually managed to use the second fob and replaced both key fob batteries. Same message today. On another forum, US based, it was suggested that it could be the car battery needing replacement? Or, a software update?

As I typed this, the service centre phoned and the car is booked in for next week.

Of course this all happened whilst my husband is o'seas. Any advice? (not on the husband!) 🙃
