Oil consumption

Featured Replies

This has got to be an issue, bought a 1 yr old car only done 8k and ive now done 13,500 checked Oil yest and the dipstick is showing oil level at min mark so its like used god knows how much in 5.5k

I change oil every 10k but didnt think id need to top it up during these periods .

Another thing is sometimes i get a slight whiff of oil coming into the car but my nose is quite sensitive and is only slight.

First of all im gunna get it checked out for a possible leak ( which id be shocked if there was )

But other then that, could it be that the engine is still new and needs to settle down?

Last 2 skoda's ( high mileage) no burning oil so if its no leaks and the dealer says its normal then im thinking these arent very good engines to do this ?

2.0 TDI 200BHP by the way.

I’m pretty sure new engines will use a bit more and settle down, I believe people have said on here as well it’s almost leaving the factory low.

IMO they should be topping to max during its inspection before leaving but don’t think they do

@MP74 if you had checked where the oil was when cold and you collected the car and then at normal operating temp you should know how much oil it used to get back up showing the same.  Needing to top up oil after 5,500 miles is fine if you did not check.

I didnt check the oil straight away although maybe after 1k and it was about 3/4 .

But after 5.5 k the cold oil level is around the bottom ball of the dipstick.

I can cope if the engine is still bedding in but if it is going to get worse its a bit of a worry.

Ill be changing the oil in 4.5 miles with Ow/30 quantum long life...but im topping up with 5/30 ( bcz i have a bit spare )

Can anyone shed any light on the occasional faint oil smell coming thru vents ( very faint )

On another note will this car still take the same oil filters as a 2017 model with same engine as i still have 4 left .

3/4,s was a time to top up if that is you checking it at the normal operating temperature.

Your cars recommended oil is VW508 00 / 509 00 is it not, 0w 20 FS IV.

Think thats correct however is there much difference between the official recommended 0w20 over the TPS recommendation that is 0w30?

Re the 5w30 thats only top up oil.

I have a new 2l TDI which is consuming around 1l of oil per 7000km.

As it was new I took it back to the dealer at 6800km and 13500km.

They checked everything, topped up the oil and told me it was "normal" consumption.

I just passed 21k km and it asked for more oil.

I'm "recording" the situation with the dealer as I have 3 year warranty but I'm a little disappointed if it stays like this.

Unless it gets worse they've said there is nothing they can do because it's within the VAG spec.

I'm waiting for the first full service at 30k if they will insist on an oil change as 80% of the oil has already been changed.

The only explanation they have was that they had seen more cars like this due to the change in oil spec 0W30 compared to 5w30 from my Octavia TDi.

Within the warranty I would not be allowed to change the oil spec particularly if something was not optimal and it got worse as it would be more difficult to claim against VAG for a new engine/DPF etc

Interestingly the 200bhp evo engine uses the older spec oil 507.00 0w 30w. The 150 bhp uses the 508.00 0w 20w. Different pistons.

Im now 900 miles away from the first oil change ( I do enormous miles ) ive used about 1litre of oil as a top up that will probably work out per 9k miles.

I done some research and apparently this is normal for all modern cars as the higher spec oil is much more thinner and does tend to burn quicker. However the offset to this would be better mpg and more environmentally friendly.

Will keep an eye on things though but for anyone else reading this 1 litre ( even maybe 2) is normal per service interval.

My car which is also a 200 TDI has now done 41k miles at just over 2 years old. The low oil light came on after about 13k miles so I added a litre but have never needed to do it since between services so I'm hoping it's not going to be necessary in future, perhaps just higher consumption while the engine is bedding in.

Yeah i think that also could be accurate.

Yes, but it also has a lower HTHS rating, down from 3.5 CP for C3  VW 504 VW 507 5W-30 oil to between 2.6 & 2.9 CP for C5bVW508 VW 509 0W-20 oil. ( the engine will wear quicker )

At a potential 2%.

Thanks. AG Falco

But it is lower Emissions Skoda / VW talk about.

Which was why they went 0w 20 FS IV before the WLTP testing came in.

So maybe just less fuel used & less emissions under certain conditions.

(Like under a WLTP Regime.)

Maybe no better economy, no less emissions real world on real roads and real weather, and more of the more expensive Synthetic oil used.

No Green really.

So what you saying here stick to 5w/30 and go against VW / Skoda recommended?

Yes.

No.  5W-30 C3 is an option!

My 2023 UP had it's first service 2 weeks ago.

5W-30 C3 is an option to fit to my car, when it lists 0W-20 C5 as recommended.

I asked them to fit the 5W-30 C3 oil.

They did double check with me before doing it.

( I took some info in with me. )

They did note this on the invoice/worksheet.

I have also changed the oil sticked under the bonnet to note the oil now fitted.

All good.

Thanks. AG Falco
