Superb 2.0 150ps limp mode..

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I own a 2020 Skoda Superb Estate, the 2.0 150PS variant I believe. I regularly make long distance trips to Germany and cruise on the Autobahn. I’ve realised recently when travelling a high speed for prolonged periods of time (over 90mph for approx 6-7 minutes as an example but this varies in both time and speed) the car engine oil temp will rapidly reach over 110 and at approx 115-116, the car cuts power, flashes an orange coil and runs at 50% power until turned off/on again.

Ive had the engine oil temp reach 128 before as well reaching speeds of 137mph. Whilst I know these aren’t sport cars, I’d expect them to be somewhat capable of high speeds on the very roads they were designed to drive on.

This is massively dangerous when already driving at high speeds and slowing down rapidly due to limp mode initiating. The car is serviced to schedule every year and the coolant levels have been checked.

any ideas what could be causing the issue?

Coolant pump fault would be my guess.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

What does the coolant temperature read when this happens - does it lose coolant?

The oil temperature you quote when the car goes into limp mode does not seem high to me for the speed.

@X27 Welcome.

What is the cars mileage / km covered now,

and is it oil changes every 9,400 miles / 12 months or are you doing more than that in a year?

Is is VW508 00 / 509 00 0w 20 FS IV oil it got

or is it running on VW 504 00 / 509 00,  0W 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III ?

Thanks for your replies all.

I forgot to mention, so by way of adding some clarity, this car is a company car. It is serviced every year according to manufacturer scheduling.

The coolant temp, assuming this is the small analogue dial on the left of the instrument cluster sticks at 90 no matter the temperature.

My problem is the car going into limp mode. I actually watch the engine temp rather than the speedo as I know when it hits approx 116, the car is going

to go into said mode and lose 50% power. It’s like it cannot handle prolonged speed.

The car is a 2020 Estate, SE. It’s a work horse and covers 20k miles a year so already sitting close to 90k total mileage.

its serviced according to VW scheduling, and that’s factoring in the excessive mileage it does, so annual oil changes, fluid top ups, tyres and DSG service are all done. Unfortunately because of that, I don’t know what type of oil is in the car.

oil is changed at least every 12 months

So on Variable Servicing, 18,000 - 20,000 miles, 24 months, and getting that done?

Is it one DSG Service done, @ 80,000 miles, or has it had more than one?

Is there no paperwork showing the Oil Part number, maybe showing if it is 0w 20 FS IV they used.

Best get it into the Techs and see what is the issue.

I'm inclined to think that the slightly raised oil temperature when this occurs is not the reason the engine goes into limp mode - you say you have previously seen the oil temp go to 128deg, presumably without issue (although that temp is perhaps a bit high)

You need to get the DTC error codes read to find out what is causing the problem.

"The coolant temp, assuming this is the small analogue dial on the left of the instrument cluster sticks at 90 no matter the temperature." - I think you'll find that this is the oil temperature gauge.

In any case, it's a company-maintained car and you should get back to the garage and have them check everything over.

Good luck, and please let the group know the outcome. There could be others here who experience similar problems some time.

NB. The analogue temperature gauge to the left of the RPM dial is actually the COOLANT (water) temperature - NOT oil!

Thanks, Warrior193, and apologies to X27 - I stand corrected. I must try to read the manual more, but my eyes keep glazing over!  🤔

its a known vag/skoda issue, the coolant pump fails, should be a quick swap out by a dealer ( mine took a day, when i had a similar issue)

Hi All,

Thought I’d update this for people who experience the same issue.

long story short Skoda ended up changing the Cambelt, Coolant Pump and did a full service, sensor check and all fluids changed in the car. This strangely made the problem worse and the glow plug warning starting flashing almost immediately after leaving. I noticed this time it would come on after pushing on the accelerator hard. OBD scanned it myself and revealed a Fuel Rail/Pressure problem.

diagnosis was a high pressure fuel pump gone. Since then, not had any issues with the car.

Got there in the end, even if it did cost my company £3600 all in for all their work.
